Apparently our team selection is going to be based on the pitch. I sense 6 central midfield players.
In which case I predict 3 Gardeners, 2 labourers and a JCB
What about players issued with six-inch studs for pitch-drainage, and selection based on players' ability to maintain a very high stride for 90 minutes.

Nobody going to do the honours then...? Okay, I'll do it:

DRAW!

Unfortunately Houston couldn't find the 6 inch studs at half time, would have made for a more entertaining encounter

Terrible game all round. Both teams were next to useless in being able to do much well. Few chances, mostly scrappy, either side could have won. Pitch didn't help, but lot of play was pretty poor.

Goodwillie was isolated again, not much happening out wide. Not sure in the point of D Robertson in the middle. He doesn't attack eough from that position, and doesn't contribute much else either. His role's a mystery to me. Buaban was worst seen for a long time, touches and passing were dire. Conway didn't really do much, although was better than most.

Russell worked hard, but little impact.

I think I can grow to like van der Meulen. After being caught in possession once taking too long, from then on he hoofed the ball full power 90% of the time it came his way. Even Dods would have looked composed in comparison. Very attacking and mobile, but liable to get beaten. Think he'll need a steady player along side. Dillon was probably best player again. Good all round play. S Robertson was good too, covered whole park.

An when we're playing a direct game and don't even bother with Shala late on when it's clearly not working for Goodwillie, that says something else about him.

Overall, it didn't work at all. If we're doing 5 in the middle, we need Swanson or Armstrong or someting forward thinking in the middle, might link things up with the front players, which was badly needed all game.

Ref was good, not much to do though. Think he booked Goodwillie to relieve his boredom.

I'm not one for stats as a yard-stick of a game, but I think 50-50 posession and no shots-on-target each says it all.
We murdered them at corners mind..

edit - Hm. No attempts on target but BBC text reporting of saves by both goalkeepers. Mysterious.

I could have sworn that's wrong. They had one off the line, and either Swanson or Goodwillie had a weak effort at Enkleman. So was at least 1-1 on shots on target I think.

I suspected as much (see edit above).
Cheers for the write-up though. You did well considering not much happened.

a 5 man midfield against St. Johnstone? For Christ's sake

Though maybe not so bad if we fielded that tactic with 10 men as United's website match report currently claims.

Forgot about this one (whatsa not doing his job properly, obviously), thankfully it seems.

Roll on the next game, and the one after that, and the two after that.

The BBC stats are always wrong. It's not uncommon for them to record less shots on goal than actual goals.

The commentary last night made great play of the amount of injuries at United, suggesting terrible luck. We knew before the season started that we were paper thin at the back, we're now just reaping what we sowed.

I don't think the formation was the problem, more the personnel. No-one working with Goodwille that well. Surely Conway, D Robertson or Russell should have. If they had, the formation would have been fine I think. I don't think we were overly negative, just missing quality, or failing that a spark from somewhere.

I recall them recently tracking a player's ferocious drive ending up in the crowd, some 3 minutes after the full time whistle had been recorded.
