World Cup; Lost Again

World Soccer has run several features on how the process was "bought". Now I'm not saying a single person in FIFA took a wad of cash, but millions and millions of dollars was given to FIFA by Qatar to built facilities via various projects and these facilities were almost exclusively built in countries that then voted for Qatar to hold the World Cup. Rocket science this isn't.

The organisers of the Qatar World Cup must be about the only people shocked by the slave labour employed in despotic middle east regimes. Just another reason that sporting events shouldn't be taken to these medieval backward nutjob hell holes.

Sporting events are supposed to be separated from politics. If you want to go down the road of making sure a host country isn't upsetting some other country or doing some nasty shit, then we run out of countries very quickly and every sporting event gets played in a giant hanger in Antarctica.

I quite like it when major sporting events are hosted in shady countries - it shines a light on that country.

I seem to remember Argentina's junta managed to increase harmony and national pride for the '78 World Cup.

Pretty f*cking compelling evidence there in support of your argument, findus. You can use it if you want. :banjmp:

Good point, Wassa. If light hadn't been shone by the XI Olympiad, god knows what Hitler might have got up to.

Yeah, that's fair enough. Because the cup going to Qatar has nothing to do with politics, does it?

Could have a game played in each countries territory to keep it fair. Except the territories that people disagree on...

How about a big floating pitch in international waters someplace? It may be better than Qatar.

Compared to the road you're advocating, not really.

Arrests in response to journalists investigating Qatar's brand of shady shit...

Still wondering if it's going to 'kick off' next summer in Brazil, like it did a few months back.

That's Dubai, isn't it?

Findus, I'm shocked -- shocked! -- that you're an apologist for a rich dictatorship with a scandalous human rights record. That came straight out of leftfield ...

What I don't get is the assumption that any boycott of a tournament has to be at a national, association level. Surely players have the ability (latent, perhaps) to think for themselves? Surely the polyester ties in the banqueting suites can't maintain this pretence forever that they're control the game, and the players are their chattel. Hypothetically, what'd happen if Messi, Ronaldo Jr, Janusaj, Brooklyn Beckham and Ryan Dow all say "no ta" to Qatar on humanitarian grounds? How glorious would that be?

See that's something that kinda puzzles me a wee bit, everyone suspects there's been foul play afoot, bribes and such, financial motives to give it to Qatar. But with all that suspicion, plus all the recent cases of bribery and corruption in FIFA, I (perhaps naively) struggle to see how they could receive a huge bribe and not have it picked up upon, especially with all the talk for transparency and fair play. If (as we seemingly all assume) Qatar have paid FIFA shitloads to get given this tournament, why has nobody picked up anything.
It appears the FBI have indeed picked up on something:

I am scandalised to hear that Jack Warner may have been involved in activities that end up with him lining his and his family's pockets.
Scandalised.

Yep, no real surprise about who was involved, and I'm sure FIFA will make a point of highlighting he's an ex member etc, but most people will be surprised to hear actual evidence of such goings on coming to light well before the tournament even begins. Is this grounds for a rethink? Legal challenge from other bidders, etc?

(Obviously I already know the answer to the above questions.....)

Seems more and more details are being uncovered on the mess of the Qatar bid.

I think they'll need to choose a new host. Aside from the impracticalities of the country, no-one looks like being able to turn a blind eye to the corruption any more.

Plenty time to choose a new host. Or for more bribes to be forth coming....

Apologies, couldn't think of a better place to share this mildly amusing news, he'll be hoping to beat off his fellow challengers Canape & Caviar 1st though....

Frenchman Jerome Champagne has confirmed he plans to challenge Sepp Blatter for the Fifa presidency.

Blatter announced his intention to seek a fifth term in charge last week.

Former diplomat Champagne, 56, worked for Fifa for 11 years as an executive before leaving in 2010.

"I have just written to the Fifa Ad-hoc Electoral Committee and its president, Mr Domenico Scala, to confirm my intention to run for Fifa president," he wrote on his website.

Champagne needs the backing of five Fifa member Football Associations but does not have to disclose who they are until official declarations are made in January.
