And probably quite rightfully. Exposing corruption at a time when you're using corruption to make substantial gains is a bit moronic. Ah well BBC, £15m down the shiter, job done  B)

What gains would the BBC have made by the 2018 World Cup being in England? And how did the BBC use corruption to make those gains?

BBC is a public service. We, the public, would gain a lot economically from hosting the World Cup.

Businesses would have made money. To say that the BBC would benefit from that is frankly nonsense.

In real terms, the BBC didn't have anything to gain from England hosting the World Cup.

If they had had vested interests, then more credit to them for showing the programme on principle.

Thanks for directly answering, though.

"vested interests" is exactly what I'm talking about as you well know, I'm not talking about them winning the f*cking Paradise Windfall.

So credit to them for screwing up the World Cup bid in their bid for the Storm In A Teacup award at Cannes Film Festival. Everyone in the country salutes them for alerting us to this outrage, a situation which we were previously absolutely oblivious to, and can now rectify with a united front of UK Football Fans v. The Great Evil.
All together now, "Kum Ba Ya my Lord, Kum Ba Ya..."

What a lot of shit you talk, Skeletor, and with such an awful, misconceived flourish.

That awful Panorama expose didn't cost England the World Cup and if it had done it would have been entirely justified in doing so. The alternative is to turn a blind eye to corruption. The mistake here was not the BBC or anyone else in the media pointing out the corruption but the English bidding for a prize that they knew they couldn't win.

You can't tongue Fifa arse for five years and complain that someone else did it better than you.

This article, which slightly reminiscent of a guy being dumped and then saying "I never really fancied her anyway", does illustrate the perks that Fifa insist on before the World Cup is allowed on your shores. Equal rights for women and homosexuals and abolition of slave labour aren't amongst them.

It's hardly surprising that an organisation with a history of no accountability and the confirmed crook Jack Warner as its vice president would be keen to move its business outside of democracies and free presses.

What is surprising is the belly aching from England about the fact that the whole thing was so clearly a carve up. They're either naive, or - perhaps more likely- pissed off because their bribes weren't big enough. It's a sordid business all over, that's for sure, but that's sport at the highest level in our society isn't it?

No, I actually don't know what you're talking about.

The BBC had no vested interests. It is an organisation made up of individuals. Some individuals made a programme on corrupt FIFA practices. The scheduling individuals, having no financial gain to make from the World Cup, saw no reason to kowtow to those who did have a vested interest. So they showed the programme when they thought was best. End of story.

Does anyone actually make a profit from hosting the world cup, except FIFA? How much were we expected to make, if we'd have been sucessful in getting it?

Additional tourism would've benefited English companies. There would have been additional renovation contracts for some stadia, as well as new transport links and such like. Extra taxes come with that.

The Economist cites PWC as saying the tournament adds £3.2bn to GDP.

I guess that's a nice sum then...

Althougth as it says, we benefit from having a lot already in place. Wonder if Russia will be as good for their economy.

Incidentally, the Asian Cup is happening now in Qatar. Apparently the game earlier today between North Korea and the UAE drew a grand total of 3000 fans.

Which is about twice the population of Qatar.

The Qataris obviously had a more satisfying range of bribes than the other bidding nations.

And their media didn't try to expose the bribery, allowing their country to play the game.

By "play the game" you mean procuring hookers, cocaine and envelopes stuffed with nonsequential dollar bills to shovel without any sense of decency or restraint in the direction of Jabba Blatter and his cartel of porcine suits?

Yeah. Damn those media.
