I was just about to post the same thing. I bet if we had got a rather higher offer for Conway in August we wouldn't be talking about this now. I think it's also a reality check for the fans and the players, especially the ones going out of contract or seeking extensions. |

I had a dream the other night that we went into administration. I was also cleaning up dirty needles in the park and got one full of blood right through my hand. Better cut back on the cheese. |

I wish Thompson would fuck off with this whiny nonsense. There, it needed saying and I've said it.
Presumably we wouldn't have a debt of £6M today if we had done. And who exactly is responsible for the hellish state of the club's finances, if not he and his late father? Was there ever a plan to repay the debt or is cashflow the only concern with the debt being the next guy's problem? I'm really bored with this tune. |

What frustrates me about Thompson is that he always throws around these doomy, dreary pocket factoids without ever fleshing out a detail. So what shortfall was this £450k to cover? And why 18-20 months? Let's begin with the 10% drop in attendance this year. That should be easy enough to check; is it true? We all know that S. Thompson considers his inheritance a burden. He's told us often enough. In that context, it jars when he talks about how "we" saved the club from administration and "we" spent however many millions steadying the ship. He had f*ck all to do with the decisions that created his father's wealth and f*ck all with the decisions that frittered it away. Now he's gained by dint of lineage a £7m turnover company with the task of keeping it at cashflow breakeven. I suggest he stops moaning and gets on with it. Eta: cross post with Ivan. Sorry. Though I've said the same on the archive board. |

I presume it's a kind of message to those not wanting to give money for the derby thing, I can't see any other reason to just repeat the same old doom and gloom story again, blaming everyone else. |

I agree with Ivan and Naebody. I'm sick of hearing about this prick talking about his father's decisions as if they were his. I don't think he has any passion for United. |

They've done a lot for the club, his family, but they've made a lot of mistakes as well with their own cash. They must have pissed a load away paying people off, which is a lesson they still don't seem to have learned given the reputedly sizeable sum Sandaza walked off with: but over the Thomson years we've had Alex Smith, Ian McCall, Brewster and their management teams all of whom must have taken hundreds of thousands out of the club - not to mention countless players, including the farce that was Lee Miller (we pay him off then the Sheep make a cool 1/2 million off him). In any business, if you manage it badly and keep making blunders, you pay the price. It seems very ungallant of Thomson to consistently fail to recognise his family's input has not just been good for the club. |

Equally can anyone make any money running a SPL club to any sort of reasonable standard? It must be frustrating that depsite winning the Cup and doing well in the league etc attendance remain fairly static. But the truth is that is how it always is and it will never change. I doubt our attendances shifted one way or the other when we won the league. But if you want to maintain a top 6 side then we have to pay what we do for players, and if that isn't financially viable then we will be more like Kilmarnock and a bit more up and down. when that happens, you can bet Thompson gets all the grief and abuse going for not investing in the club etc. |

If it's such a burden for his family - and it appears to be - then why not advertise for buyers, or even financial input? |

To answer my own question, average attendance for 2009/10 was 7,864. The average for 2008/09 was 8,654, so that's a fall of 9.1%. However, 08/09 was up 4.3% on the previous year, and up 21% on 07/08. The average attendance at Tannadice over the past nine years is 7,985. So, last year's attendance was down 1.5% compared with the long-term average. Who? Who is going to buy or put into a Scottish Premier League club? The game is on its arse - Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, St Midden, Rangers all have been unable to attract new investment, the investment they have has come from in most cases weathly fans. How on earth would we do it? I don't remember anybody coming forward at the time Eddie Thompson invested. |

Anyone have any idea what Thompson's plan is? Is it pay back the debt at £50k a year for the next 120 years? Right everyone, tighten your belts! Dripping sandwiches all round. |

A bit from The Courier: Given the economic climate, Thompson conceded he should have said yes to Boro when they came in for Conway, who falls out of contract in May. "Do I regret it? Hindsight is a great thing, but I think what the summer proved is that there is not a lot of money out there for transfer fees," he said. "If people think players are worth one, two or three million they are living in cloud-cuckooland. "I am trying to be honest and you can look back and say maybe we should have taken the money, particularly if Craig doesn't re-sign for us." In hindsight too. We'd have likely given him pelters if he'd sold for £600,000. And now Conway is injured, and Strachan has gone. |
