As someone said on Radio Scotland today, by the same token peanuts are more dangerous than arsenic. |

I did not say deaths, I said he said they were more dangerous. I presumed he meant that more people had to receive medical treatment as a consequence of nut allergies and choking on nuts than from arsenic poisoning. He was simply pointing out the inappropriateness and futiity of the comparison. |

What an asinine analogy. So, comparing the most widely abused drug in the world with the most widely reviled is akin to comparing a poisonous metal with a snack food. Really? ... Incidentally, I'm sure many more people are killed by peanuts. But then people don't deliberately ingest arsenic unlike peanuts, heroin and alcohol. |

Yes, reducing a research paper to five words then attacking those five words for lack of nuance certainly does seem futile. Mosquitos are about a million times more dangerous than sharks. Does that tell us anything much about sharks? No, but it's an arresting way to underline the dangers of mosquitos. In a paper on mosquitos it'd make a good headline, but not a good conclusion. The depth of public discourse in this country depresses me. Sorry if that sounds snobbish, but it does. Eta: I think I've just agreed with Ivan again. There goes that feeling in my winkle. |

As well as the comparisons with other drugs (although I'm not going to be convinved by a measuer that includes 'environmental damage'), there does seem to be some calls in the paper for more sensible laws on some drugs, but the usual other stronger measures for alcohol. Just another attack on alcohol - it's a slippery slope... |

The level of discourse on this board depresses me. Everyone agrees with each other and are generally reasonable. Please, for the love of beelzebub, someone PM calico and Zico. |

What are the widespread envionmenal impact of drugs? I can't get the report to find out. It doesn't seem a primary concern or impact of drug use. |

A couple of times. But with other substances and I can barely remember it. I do remember the jaw and lips hurting the next days though. |
