Sorry, I'm not sure what point you're making.

I'd be surprised if either Dillon or Dixon were staying back deliberately, whether on their own initiative or under Houston's instruction. If they're not getting forward it's because the structure of the team isn't working.

I think with the team structure they should be getting forward more. But they're not. So either they don't want to or have been told not to.

Robertson doesn't hang wide often - surely there's space for Dillon to get into? Or there should be.

It's not a certain point, just something that's been niggling me recently....

Or they're not able to. ;)

Nah, because they'd at least try. Kova storms up the wing on occassions then looks lost and not able, but at least he got there. Unless they've forgotten how to run.

Okay, so we have two possible scenarios:

1. The shape of the team IS conducive to allowing the full backs to attack and EITHER Houston has inexplicably told them not to OR they've taken it upon themselves not to bother.

OR

2. The shape of the team isn't conducive to them getting forward.

My money's on option 2. WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, I don't think it's as easy as saying a narrow midfield makes it easy for full backs, or a flat midfield makes it easier or harder. You need to look at what the whole team is doing, where the ball is being played, whether a winger is drifting in to make space, or laying the ball back etc. I'll grant you that the full backs need to get forward when the midfield is narrow because otherwise there's no width but that's not the same as saying that it's easy for them to do so. If we're playing narrow then the rest of the team needs to function in such a manner so as to allow the full backs to get forward. Little chance to do that if, for example, you're punting the ball long to Jon Daly all afternoon.

And option 3 - the opposition are blocking them getting forward.

I'm sure it could be anything. I'd actually rather it was something specific - like option 1 or 2 (or 3). As long as it's not the alternative that there's no plan and they're just doing whatever.

It was just one of the things that we did when we were playing well, and don't seem to be at the moment, so just trying to see why.

A lot of them do have some unnaturally deep dislike of Daly, it has to be said. Just a pity Torres and Ibrahimovic are currently on our injured list and Thompson can't remember the PIN to United's 25m quid war chest

Some volley from the big fella on the BBC highlights. Caught it a little too well possibly.
Oh, and what on earth is Garry doing around the 1:12 mark?
Gets shown inside and then... I actually can't describe it.

Things no words can describe? Thats United!

What is it with Jon Daly? He'll miss tap ins, one-on-ones and other things you'd deem as a striker he should be putting away, looks slow and sluggish..... and then shows great agility catching more than a few scissor kicks perfectly from tricky crosses. Baffling

Why are we always so gash against Motherwell? Finally save the highlights and it looks like five wouldn't have flattered them.

Nah, five would have flattered them. 2-1 or 3-1 would have been fair. For all that Motherwell passed the ball around well in the first half they didn't create very many clear cut chances.

And we created more than the zero shots on target the BBC report gives us credit for (although not much).

You're going round in circles now, Setenza.

Option 3 is the same as option 2.

Two shots on target in the BBC's highlights at least.

Save those two incicents the whole five minutes on the BBC, upon which my opinion is based, is Motherwell chances, and good ones at that. But I wasn't there, so if you say it wasn't as bad as it looks I'm happy to be wrong.

Oh no, we were shite, just Motherwell weren't that great either.

If every shot on target had gone in (including Seve's and Dillon's for 'Well) it would probably have been 4-2 or 5-3. We were marginally on top between our goal and their second. I think the final score was about right. No complaints but neither were we in any danger of a hammering.
