Melville tenders resignation. Can't imagine that will be too much of a bother for Dundee, as there's no way they could have been relying financially on an Aberdeen fan whose motivations for getting involved with DFC were always baffling.

As posted on EFF.

Calum Melville to stand down as Dundee director

The Dens Park benefactor offers to step down from the First Division club, saying he can't dedicate any more time to his role.

Calum Melville has tendered his resignation to Dundee's board, after reportedly putting £1.3 million into the club.

Calum Melville has offered his resignation to Dundee, stating he can no longer commit to the time demanded by his role at Dens Park.

A Dundee spokesperson confirmed to STV Sport this morning that Melville has informed the club of his intention to leave his position. However, the board are yet to accept and are understood to be holding a meeting within the next 24 hours.

In a brief statement, Dundee confirmed Melville had made overtures to stand down but the club would not comment further.

"Dundee Football Club can confirm that Calum Melville has offered his resignation as director of Dundee Football Club," it read. "This will be discussed at a Board meeting and until then no further comment will be made."

The Aberdeen-based businessman bankrolled last season's failed campaign to win the First Division, investing heavily in star players such as Leigh Griffiths and Gary Harkins from their divisional rivals.

But Inverness' late surge denied them promotion to the SPL, costing manager Jocky Scott his job and leading to swingeing cuts in the playing staff over the summer.

Scott carried the can for Dundee missing out on top spot and was sacked in March. The three-time Dens Park manager took the club to a tribunal regarding his dismissal and it was a statement at the hearing on Monday which brought Melville's resignation to light.

Dundee are currently seventh in the First Division, drawing 0-0 with previous table toppers Raith Rovers on Saturday and having taken eight points from their first six games. They currently sit seven points behind league leaders Dunfermline Athletic.

It is expected Dundee will issue a statement on Melville's future on Monday morning, outlining what future commitments he will be able to give to the club.

Well, £1.3m and a team gets worse, better off without him.

For the sake of bringing everyone up to speed, let's just fill in some of the backstory here.

Quote:

The tribunal hearing was due to start at 10am on Monday before employment judge Ian McFatridge. However, before witnesses were called lawyer Noele McClelland, representing Dundee FC, told the tribunal that Melville would not be present.

She said: "I had intended for Calum Melville to be the first witness but he has tendered his resignation from the board of directors. He has advised he is unable to be here because of difficulties with his business.

"He is unable to dedicate any time to the club and all his time and efforts are being dedicated to his employers. He is not physically or mentally capable of being here."

Melville ran an oil services company that was bought by Cosalt, a bigger fish. Two weeks ago he was suspended, then resigned, from Cosalt "whilst the company carries out an internal review of the operating practices of the group's businesses in Aberdeen". (It is therefore not entirely clear who, in the court statement, "his employers" actually are).

Yet, according to Dundee's CEO.

Quote:

“Calum Melville has previously committed to a certain level of funding and we do not expect that to change.”

Oh dear. There may be a difference between what he expects and what transpires.

Translation: Well, he didn't say he wouldn't continue to fund us when he said "I quit" and stormed out, so everything should be fine.

Time for the return of an old friend, maybe? From the Sun, so it's probably nonsense, but interesting nonetheless.

Giovanni Di Stefano says he will bankroll Dundee's survival bid - but only if he gets full control. The controversial Anglo-Italian lawyer wants to buy the Dens Park club despite being forced out six and a half years ago, after doubt surrounded the position of current backer Calum Melville. Di Stefano said: "I have no problem filling in the hole if there is a shortfall for this season or next. But I would have to have the say in the club."

As long as he brings back all his old mates, it's bound to work out.

Burley for manager.

Dundee can't help but provide endless entertainment, can they? Still, I hear they're signing Edgar Davids and James McFadden.

They lost 2-1 to Cowdenbeath today. Stop sniggering at the back there.

Stop sniggering at the back there.

It would be easier to stop breathing.

Leigh Griffiths got a consolation for Dundee. Yes, a consolation, for Dundee, against Cowdenbeath.

Chisholm surely close to the edge now. Promotion not looking likely... wonder about relegation...

There's bound to be at least one team worse than them, thanks to the managerial stylings of one Ian FcCall.

Even with a 10 point deduction...?
