If it's Firefox, then the top right corner has a button which is three Click that and there's a 'save page' option. Don't know about other browsers though. Soz. And yes, Cob, this thread and it's contents are why I really love this forum. Excellent post, Naebs. Very (a)cutely observed. I couldn't agree more about the Bruegel and Rubens references but can't help see, especially in the first detail, some grotesque, sinewy Howson quality. Edited by reekie, Feb 9 2016, 10:19 PM.

Getting a bit off topic here, chaps. Address zico's original question or I'm deleting this thread. |

Ok, to bring it back right on topic I remember that famous moment when McGinnis scored that o.g. v Man United. Utter silence from the bulk of the ground and a lull following it, but then the old fashioned banks of encouragement from the DUFC three quarters of the ground. I don't think I'm misrepresenting the moment in that no one berated him for it, there weren't howls of insult and derision from the fans. If that had been the equivalent - say, Spittal, in a tie as big as that he'd be torn into by the bulk of the 'support'. It's true that they got grumbled at in lesser games, guys like McGinnis and Beaumont, but they did have hard acts to follow. The guys these days have far lesser names to emulate and still get pelters for not being them. Look at the abuse dished out to Gunning for not being a commanding centre half like..er...Gunning. (I hear he was much better on Saturday, by the way?) In summary, I don't reckon there's much chance we'd be getting another fair play award any time soon. |

The question about electric shavers? No idea. The technology might've improved in the 25 years since I've used one, when they tended to leave you looking like you were on day release from a secure unit. |

Oh yes, I remember that silence. I have come to the view in the last few seasons that our fans are pretty ridiculous when it comes right down to it. The Friday night game we lost 1-0 at Motherwell a season back, despite being the better side was a classic of the genre - Armstrong got the most ridiculous amount of abuse for having the temerity to try short passes - the guy beside me was spitting it he was so angry at his refusal to just get in the box (to Aidan Connolly who was up front that night), and when his pal told him to calm it down, went absolutely loopy all over again. But the truth is probably all fans of all clubs are exactly the same. I think they go to the football so they can get annoyed. |

I don't think that's it really. Not intentionally anyway. I think it's an extension of the modern cult of 'self', where we go to gigs and spend the whole time filming it to prove we were there rather than actually, you know, enjoying it while we're there. It's where we add our own input on something even if we have nothing to say, just because our own opinion has to be important, as it ours. It's public petitions based on offence, it's the apathy in taking care of those around us or our own environment, it's the parents parking outside the school on a school run whether that makes it more awkward for everyone else or not, it's blaming the teachers for our kids being brought up badly and misbehaving. It's the moaning about local government while doing bugger all to get involved, it's the hatred towards immigrants, travellers and bankers. It's road rage, it's lack of willingness to pay your way, it's lonely people dying alone and being left dead for years before anyone notices. It's the modern form of solipsism where only we (and ours) matter. The club is ours and we help create it (though we don't, in any real sense, but we think we do) so when it fails because we invest a large portion of our psyche in it we fail too. And that is unacceptable, so we get angry and frustrated and look for someone to blame. And it can't be ourselves because although we help create it when it wins, we're never to blame for anything that goes wrong in our lives, right? In short, it's f*cking capitalism right enough. If that's the case, why do these people hang around? Most selfish people abandon ship at the first sign of trouble. Instead, there's plenty of our (and other clubs) fans who turn up at Ross County on a wet evening when United are playing terribly, then go on to get angry. They enjoy it. There was a guy who used to sit about 10 seats along from me. If things were going well, he was silent. As soon as someone went wrong, he'd start to moan and shout. Even if we were 4-1 up and clearly going to win. When things were going really wrong, he'd get so visibly angry that his health must have suffered. Maybe he was internally happy when things were going well, and just didn't express it. But yhy turn up at all? He's not been there past season or two, maybe gave up or died, but I always wondered what he got from attending. Edited by Setenza, Feb 10 2016, 02:50 PM.

Well, they're likely to as they get better health care and benefits and earlier retirement than those of us who have come after or before them. They never had it so good right enough. |

Those people are a tough one, I admit. Perhaps a chance to vent at the one place in their life where they can...if they shouted at their boss, wife or kids like that they'd be locked up and/or socially rejected. You can let it all out at the match. But it's probably deeper than that...a post-grad psychlogy thesis probably awaits for it. |

Pretty sure I berated him, although I was only 11 and my gerbil had just popped its clogs that afternoon. I arrived at the game pre-traumatised and just lashed out. |
