Extra time for a few players to get over injuries is welcome. Keeping a cup run going for even another round could help to get some confidence back in the team. Think start the same team as last game and aim to keep the positive frame of mind. |

Kawashima Dillon Gunning Donaldson Spittall Demel Paton Rankin Dow Murray McKay Subs: Zwick, Dixon, Knoyle, Durnan, Fraser, Anier, Sinema-Pongolle I share the opinion that momentum is all, so avoiding defeat today is a must. I'll go for a slightly less swashbuckling 3-1 win today. Murray, Dow, Lawless, Dillon. Also, I see we've signed Nigerian international Edward Ofere, who pereviously played for ICT. Anyone remember him? Not sure I do... |

That's a decent looking formation but not sure about the balance of long and short names and names with an even number of letters vs those with an odd number of letters. |

True. Hopefully Ofere and Riski can help with that. Two bits of text caught my eye so far.
No shock there. Still disappointed we had him and let him go.
Interesting to see Dillon taking the corners... |

Well that sounds like a satisfyingly grinding performance and win. Wins breed confidence breeds wins etc. If Fraser can earn a spot in a hard working United team under Mixu he could be superb. Is the difference chiefly the return of Dow & Paton? Both hard working guys who know their roles and are disciplined to play it. |

A good day for the terrors today. And also, Sportscene is on 24 hours earlier than it usually is! On reflection, when they play Thistle in the league these terrors need to live up to their name and be more aggressive. They need to part Thistle's cheeks a lot sooner than that. Christ, it took 85 minutes just to get their scants round the ankles! Acht, i'm sure it'll be a different type of game, although probably still a bit scrappy, but with more goals. Thistle are fighting for their life down at the bottom of that league. |

Was a pretty brutal game for most of it, neither side much quality, but was plenty of effort on both sides. Good to see some quality from Spittal and Fraser make the difference. It's exactly what we need. Otherwise, nothing new. Paton makes big difference in the middle, Demel shows signs of class, Murray runs a lot, Collum is a terrible ref. Other than a couple of poor decisions in trying to pass out at the wrong time, Donaldson was good at winning the ball. If we can keep on getting through matches against average sides without making terrible mistakes, we do have a chance. But that would have been a 0-0 most times. On partick's side, Lawless was ok, a few decent touches, but also a lot of not so good ones. Not sure he's much worse, but on that performance, not much better than out attacking options. I'd still rather sign Osman. |

I think it's definitely helped having them both back. Paton-Demel-Dow is a much more solid midfield than Rankin-Souttar-Fraser. But the other difference is we're also playing a lot more direct football in the last 2 games. Just punt it for Murray to chase after is the general approach. I'd imagine that puts lot less pressure on the midfield too. |

I certainly agree Paton has made a difference. He protected the back line won a lot of set piece second balls and apart from Murray ( our own Ginger Jamie McVardy) was the only one to press them when they were in possession, and forcing them into more hurried clearances. Other than that, I was impressed with Gunning at the back, who looks far more comfortable in a central defending position and Donaldson was solid if careless in possssion on occasion. Spittal was playing deeper than usual and he tracked back better whilst still providing occasional threat wide right. He played in Fraser well for the goal, but his dead ball delivery was overall mediocre in this game. Up front Murrays pace troubled their defenders first half, but in the second he decided he was going to play just like MCKay when we needed a bit of variety. We really need to use Murray better and if Paton could try and find him with some long passes from deep he'll be much more of a threat on the front foot than facing our goal. Fraser ( whose finish belied someone who'd previously struggled to score at top level) was introduced because of the withdrawal of Dow who on the day was totally unimpressive. Not once did he manage to get beyond the two strikers and in midfield he was second best to every challenge. kawashima was a bit meh in goal, Dillon just Dillon , Ranks looked leggy even after a long break and struggled against their physicality. Demel is physical enough but clearly struggles to last more than 60 minutes and was at times strangely over elaborate in the conditions. In general playing style terms we still let the ball have too much air against more physical sides and over- pass in non critical areas to the detriment of forward momentum in midfield. And with our current defensive crop the quality of forward balls to feet is simply not good enough. But a clean sheet is a clean sheet and two wins on the trot a rare treat. From the point of view of confidence building, the result is a strong not bad at all. Edited by TheDean, Feb 7 2016, 12:02 AM.

Overall, thought the game was awful. Passing was poor. In almost each occasion, when the ball came out from the keeper, we lost it. I thought that they had sprayed some anti-gravity turf down, the amount of time the ball spent in the air. There were few attempts on goal from either side. Back to hoofball a lot today. Thistle didna look too a bad side, but the quality of their finishing was poor. 2nd half was better, and we bucked up in the last 15 minutes. Gollum was useless. His bit on the side on the GF side wasna much better. Counted 11 times when he waited for Gollum to point the way of throw-ins before raising his flag. The lead up to the goal was one of the best moves of the match. Donaldsons long run was excellent. Then it went to Dixon I think, then to Spittal, with a geat little pass to Fraser for the neat goal. MOTM for me was Paton. Dowser excellent 1st half, but 2nd half he was struggling. Demel still doesnt look as fit as he could be, although did enjoy some of his theatrics, if a bit overplayed. Excellent result and 2 wins on the trot. Hope we can build on this. |
