In games like this when we really, really need to win, we don't have a great record in doing so. Hopefully we can get the win this time.
I've almost convinced myself that if we don't win, it doesn't matter as we're still 5 points shy, which given several months ago someone had offered us the chance of going into the split 5 pts off Kilmarnock I would have taken that.

Equally, if could sneak a win (or absolutely hump those students), Kilmarnock will absolutely shit themselves.

On the flip-side, if we do win, we'll only be six behind Hamilton, which makes me think we should ignore Kilmarnock and focus on them.

Michael Stewart on Sportscene almost seemed to suggest he fancied United to overhaul the pair of them. I don't think our defence has that number of good games in a row in them. In fact, we seem to be getting reasonable results despite their best efforts.

This one's a free hit. If we win, the rescue mission's on. If we lose, we're still only five points behind. Killie's woeful form (one win in 11!) has really done us a solid.

Guessing Colander is banned and Demel will be needing a nap, which makes Knoyle more of a risk. Reverting to Spittal and Dixon in a back five would be the obvious, though dispiriting, solution.

It would be astonishing but typical for Mixu to f@ck up on Tues night when he's got a chance to get beyond the play off places on current trends

United could be out of bottom spot by the time we have the split. Improbable, but for as cut adrift as we were we are definitely back in it and with the momentum. Hamilton are also catchable, 9 points the gap there while they have only won twice since November. I'd expect us to beat them at Tannadice too.

I'd settle for catching up 2 points on Killie before the split. We have the better goal difference and we'd also have it in our own hands (which I think Setenza mentioned earlier is actually the case now). Two tight games between now and then, so a win in one of those can hopefully close the gap further.

We've been dealt a blow for Saturday though with ICT v Hearts being called off. Allows them to be fresher while I was hoping/expecting that their chances of being top 6 would be gone by the time they played us. Barring Dundee beating Celtic tomorrow they will still have that place in the top 6 to play for. That said, I think we'll win Saturdays match. Tomorrow I see being tight, low scoring and the ball being treated like one of those Syrian refugees denied aslyum, everyone getting rid as soon as without really knowing or caring much where it goes.

Ooo, topical. Like it. Well, I don't, but you see what I mean.

Anyway, I don't think we could possibly play as well as we did v Hamilton last time at Tannadice and still lose. Looking back that was one of the most remarkably one sided (for United) losses I've ever been to. Think how different it would all be now if we'd won...but, ah well, we didn't. Somehow.

As much as I reckon a point tomorrow wouldn't be that bad, a win is a real game changer...going into the weekend fixtures within a win of them will really ramp up the pressure they'll face v an off form and nothing to play for St Johnstone side.

Yeah, agreed. Having been soundly beaten at Firhill earlier this season, there's the argument that a point wouldn't be a bad result. That may be true, but we're in a situation where we need to gain significantly more points than the teams above, so we have to be looking to win. If we were offered a draw before any of our remaining matches, we'd be daft to take it.

Big chance for us here, here's hoping!

If you take Motherwell for example, who are also pish, but have put together a run and are now, laughably, about to qualify for Europe, then it shows what a run of wins could do. For all we are now not being consistently gubbed, we haven't gone on a run of wins. I think we've won two consecutive league games maybe twice in the last 12 months?

That is what would really get us out of trouble. A draw would be fine in terms of catching Kilmarnock I think, but if we have any vague hope of getting further up the league, a couple of wins tonight and tomorrow could absolutely change the entire complexion of the rest of the season.

But we have not managed that in our up turn in form and I don't think the defence is good enough to deliver that.

You're right, Barca. Very recently Motherwell were firmly in our sights as one of the teams who could collapse but a wee run and they're suddenly safe.
Both games tonight are important to us because a win for the Dees virtually guarantees them a top-six finish.
We really want both Dundee and RossCo to have something to play for at the weekend, hopefully giving us the chance to make up six points on the two above us.
Grab that opportunity and we become the form team in a mini-league of teams who are either terrified or thinking about their holidays.

Given Thistle's wing-play, I'd stick with a back four and the midfield diamond we played against Saints.
The weather's not been great, so the pitch will be poor for passing football, meaning more of the long-ball game we saw at the weekend.
No real idea of how Knoyle played but Dillon will likely come in for Coll, either at left-back or on the right with Dixon on the other side.
Dow's pace and goal should see him keep his place alongside McKay and Anier.
Eiji
Knoyle Morris Gunning Dillon
Demel Paton Rankin
Anier Dow
McKay

3-1 United. McKay. Amoo. Rankin. Murray

Like it (the xmas tree / stealth fighter). And, yes, bring on the bionic carrot at some point. Older posters will get that reference.

We've no one really creative there. I'd want Spittal and/or Fraser to feature out wide or have an opportunity from a deadball.

Where is Robbie Muirhead btw.........?

Sun is out this evening in Glasgow, so I'm expecting a sapping game on a sodden, steaming pitch in the tropical bowl of Firhil.

Looking forward to clapping eyes on Knoyle and a late headed goal from Murray.
