Donaldson is a cumbersome panic virus. At least Gunning's failings are willful. He could be excellent, if only he wasn't a fud. I haven't seen anything in Donaldson that makes me think he could be better. Now, perhaps I've on;y seen him at his worst but I've not heard reports of him playing much better when I've not been scrutinising him. Also, there's something about him that draws my eye, and I'm hardly fascinated by centre backs. They're usually the position I watch the least as I have the least understanding of how the position works. |

Can I ask -- in the most non-confrontational way possible -- what you're basing that on? The guy's only made five starts, and none since August. I vaguely remember his games against Aberdeen, Dundee and Celtic and thought he looked the more competent of the back two (which I recognise is damning with faint praise). I'm not questioning your judgement, to be clear, I'm just curious as to how you reached the conclusion so quickly. Saying Gunning "could be excellent, if only he wasn't a fud" is like saying Douglas Bader could've been an Olympic sprinter. Gunning will be a fud long after he's a footballer. He was, is, and forever will be a fud. He should be on a register. |

Cannae mind now, but it was a very clear conclusion at the time. Mostly from TV, but he played pretty much all of the 3-0 Partick game in front of my very own eyes. |

Even if form in August was poor, can we agree it would be good to give him another chance? On the basis that - the rest of our defenders aren't in great form - he was playing in a new defence in front of a very raw keeper - we've a new manager, who may play in a style more suited to his strengths Being written off after 3-4 games is quite harsh. |

not meaning to sound confrontational here but I 'm beginning to suspect you might not like Gunning that much- what do you base this on? |

Donaldson has been given a pretty raw deal. He was dropped in the deep end with no great experience at this level. Perhaps now after a few months of training and getting to know the rest of the squad a lot better he just might be due another chance. However that doesn't excuse DUFC and Jackie Mac NOT signing an experienced CB during the last window when it was already known that the big Pole was leaving. Gunning = loose cannon (Fud), always was, always will be. |

Yes, he was beyond poor in the Partick game, but, in mitigation so were the lot of them. 11 dustbins would've given United a close game that day. Even 10 dustbins, if one were sent off. |

His inability to find anything but the opposition or touch when distributing the ball, regardless of how much time he has. His propensity to head the ball straight up in the air rather than up the pitch like a normal centre half is supposed to. His chicken impression. His sprint from the pitch at the end of the Johnnies final. His impression that he is Franz Beckenbauer when in fact he is Frank Spencer. His reputation as the team joker. His stupid grin when answering a question reminds of an eight year old trying to be a smart-arse. His attempt to bounce the ball off his stupid arse on Saturday when we're losing 2-1 in the derby. His attempted moustache. His utter fuddishness. Not a fan. |

I'd love to see that chicken impression again- because it would have meant he'd scored a goal for us. I think he's more effective in a back four than trying to shore up a back three from the left side and it would have helped if, as yasser said, he'd be alongside a more dominant CB- like a Curtis Good (pre-injury) I agree he's got a screw loose but on balance I reckon he'd be a great re-signing if in a better system. |

Can I add that he has no causal reasoning? He genuinely doesn't seem to understand that if he does one thing, it might result in another thing. For a professional footballer (or a human) that's quite a big flaw. Crows, dogs and rats all show more understanding of causality than Gavin Gunning. |
