Glad Jackie was fully focussed on the derby tonight, otherwise it might have been a bad result...................oh wait

Good job we're no in the business of trying to win football matches, coz that was one monumental disaster.

Hard to know where to start with this one. Dundee weren't even very good.

Some of United's play was quite good in patches - but if your keeper throws ones in like that, you're always up against it. It's been ages since I've done a score for each player, so here goes...

Rado 3 : Not just the flub for the goal - though that was bad enough - but his kicking was back to its usual worst and you could see him deflate as the game continued.
McGowan 5 : A lot of good running and winning the ball but too much flying in at tackles and no real attacking ability either.
Dixon 5 : One good run and cross in the first half and he did ok, I guess, but still well short of the player we lost two seasons ago.
Fojut 6 : Seems to be carrying a knock, so not a bad display at all.
Dillon 6 : Swithering between 5 and 6 for him as he doesn't inspire confidence, although didn't seem to do a lot obviously wrong. Still can't pass from the back though.
Butcher 5 : Not one of his better nights.
Rankin 6 : Marginally better than he has been lately, but often left with too much to do in midfield.
Connolly 6 : Again, looked dangerous in wee doses but his final ball wasn't good enough and he's just got no physical presence at all.
Erskine 6 : Probably our best performer, actually, when in the game. Did some good stuff holding the ball up and linking.
Ciftci 6 : Again, did some good things but lets himself down not only with stupid bookings that put him under pressure but diving too.
Anier 4 : Perhaps a bit kind, but he just started to get into the game a bit before half time. Still way short of being good enough.
Spittal, Bilate, Muirhead: 5 between them. Bilate was particularly hopeless with the first touch of Orville the Duck.

McNamara does seem lost with them at the moment. Even when they have a lot of the ball and seem to play nice touches between each other there's no real prospect of a goal: our only goal came from a rubbish decision. Tonight we played with pace, aggression and tenacity but still got comfortably beaten by a team who are off the boil themselves and who didn't create much either. Where to go from here?

You'll get 3.0 for a Dundee win, versus 2.6 for us. For anyone with a soul blackened enough to make an insurance bet, that looks quite generous. Both teams to score and penalty taken, at 1.9 and 3.5 respectively, look reasonable punts as well.
That's an 800% return, in case anyone's counting.

As I said after the County game, the team just look in the habit of losing. When was the last time we scored a goal that wasn't a penalty? Have we scored one this year?

Can you believe we still have 7 games to play? Why? Surely we could just forfeit and do something for the planet re emissions?

If we pay off Anier at a huge loss can we claim a percentage back from Jackie? 😄

Or does anyone have the number for that team in Germany that paid actual money for him?

My least favourite player since Gunning. Possibly even since McInnes.

8 games ago against ICT.

What's probably not helped is that we've tried may different combinations of formations, players and style in an attempt to score. There's no understanding or link up most of the time. Some down to quality, but most of the time we're barely even coherent.

Spittal, Connolly, Erksine, Dow all play in a variety of positions, sometimes wide, sometimes central. Ciftici sometimes alone, sometimes deep, sometimes wide.

Sometimes we play 2 holding, sometimes, 1. Sometimes 3.

When we need a goal and we throw in Muirhead and Bilate / Anier, it's unrecognisable as a formation.

The 4231 was getting a bit predictable, but even on it's bad days, it was better than the random approach we have a the moment, which seems like someone overthinking, or not thinking.

Anier's odd. He seems unable to do simple things, like receive a pass, which means he's worse than playing with 10 men. One has to assume he's going through a poor bit of form, because anyone who played like that regularly at any level wouldn't be able to put "footballer" on their passport.

Bilate at least has presence. But he still looks brutal, both to the opposition and the ball.

Why didn't Souttar start? And why didn't Spittal continue in his role as placebo Armstrong, having done okay there against County? The biggest frustration is that the team picked played precisely as expected: it held posession but lacked all traces of mojo.

I'm loathe to criticise Jackie but I do think he has a problem: he puts a lot of faith in addition. The defence doesn't gel so he plays two holding midfield, as if more bodies will make it stronger. Whenever we need a goal, he sends on more forwards to get in each other's way. It's as if he's playing an early version of Championship Manager.

I had no idea what McNamara's game plan was and his line up was baffling.

He effectively changed every part of the team, but from where I was standing, I couldn't figure out how he wanted us to play, and therefore when it all inevitably went to shit, how he was to change that.

I felt sorry for Ainer, he was pish, but he had absolutely bugger all to work with. How on earth Erskine stayed on for the whole 90 was baffling. As a player, he seems only to be able to do what is obviously front of him, but looking at yesterday's game and Saturday, he never seems to anticipate or make a move to force the play (I'm sure I'm talking nonsense here, but it did seem quite frequent that a player would make a pass that Erskine would watch then go after).

But, this is all small beer. McNamara's team lines give the impression, that like the rest of us, he has no idea what his best XI is and he is hoping that by playing everyone in some combination at some point, he will stumble upon a good team - a bit like, I might suggest what happened last season when he finally stumbled upon his best team.

It also appears that this combination does not include the one player who is generally accepted to be the best footballer at the club, Teller, can not fit into our team. What a sad reflection of our team and Mcnamara's management I would say.

Odd to think, last night, the bench cost at least £500k in transfer fees.

I'm sure our excellent chairman is certainly working on one that will deal with the remote possibility of Jackie even managing to chuck a 10 goal advantage v. Hamilton
