Nice wee article that. Good to see Sieb's doing okay.

He's not wrong either...United were mince that day.

Not he;ped by Tommy McLean's bizarre team selection - remember Pedersen (is that how to spell it?), a brilliant man marker, lost in midfield for reasons known only to TM

I have very fond memories of Sieb surging off his line. The chaos and excitement that ensued never, or perhaps only rarely, resulted in a goal conceded.

After that League Cup final our season nose dived. And didn't we have a game against Celtics immediately before the final which we also lost tamely? In fact, that team and Tommy's reign hit the buffers after this result.

Keepers don't sweep so much any more, do they? Perhaps it's because strikers have become quicker, or maybe because defences sit deeper. The last-man red card rule's probably had an influence too.

As a companion piece, it's worth reading Spiers in conversation with Hamish.

Quote:

"I just liked being involved," he says. "I was always half-decent as an outfield player - on a few occasions I played outfield for United's reserves - and maybe I felt I wanted to work more for the team. I sometimes used to think that, as goalie, I did the least of the work, so if I came out 20 yards, and it saved a team-mate retreating 20 yards, it seemed to make sense to me.

"Sometimes it went disastrously wrong, and Wee Jim would be sitting with his head in his hands. It's just the way I was."

I wasn't thinking of Sieb sweeping so much, more coming out to clutch at a cross near the penalty spot.

Everything had been going well for about a year, and then we faced Celtic twice in a week.

Gubbed 4-0 at Parkhead; then 3-0 at Ibrox.

If Sieb saw 25,000 United fans at the final - as he says in the piece - then he must have been at the magic mushrooms.
