It's like Back to the Future. With Paul Paton slowly fading out of all photographs. |

I think Bilate is decent enough coming deep. He's willing to take the ball to feet and can use it well enough. For example, in the game vs Partick when he came on, suddenly we were able to link midfield and attack, and he created a good chance for Anier by coming deep and playing forward. I don't really see it as much of a risk - he's played there for us in the past and done ok. Anier I think has shown himself to be a hard worker and nothing more. Might improve over time, but not doing enough to get a start. Playing Erskine (or Dow) up front I think limits us too much. We need a out ball and someone to hold it. Erskine's not going to win much when under pressure from van Dijk or Denayer, Bilate might. And we also need someone to score that 30 yard shot. I'd rather Bilate tried that than Erskine. |

Expert trolling from the BBC.![]() I've seen very little of Bilate but what I've seen suggests he may well be a pudding. Reports of an okay half an hour against Partick don't make me hopeful about throwing him into what's likely to be this season's biggest game, given this potential puddingness. It's not up to me though, luckily. |

Given that Erskine's first few games had him boo'd off and ridiculed as first division player at best, I think it's worth giving Bilate a chance. In the biggest game of the season, maybe not the ideal time, but I don't see him as risker than playing without a striker in a game where we're going to need to likely score 2 to win. |

The, admittedly, few times I've seen Bilate he has excellent at looking like a footballer - he points well, wears those wristband taping things well, and certainly has all the confidence going, but after that I think there isn't much there. I don't think I'd give him a chance in a cup final. |

It was more three or four reasonable touches against Partick. Half an hour is stretching it. He still showed he's quite capable of controlling it eight feet or more if the opportunity presents. |

Surely that's every game with our sieve-like defence? When was the last time we won a game by only scoring once? I'm going on the internet - I may be some time.... |

Off we go then. Rumoured team, according to that internet. .............. Cierzniak McGowan, Morris, Fojut, Dillon ........... Rankin, Paton ...... Dow, Butcher, Dixon .................. Bilate ... Not the most positive or balanced of lineups, but I guess it might work. (Or we'll flog a goal or two on individual errors then be left chasing shadows for an hour.) |

So, as expected. Dillon in at right back, with Rankin and McGowan on the wings. Dow in a free role behind Bilate. Wait, what?

Well that was bowf. Wingers aren't really performing, on account of not existing, and nothing's really sticking through the middle. Dow doing okay as lone striker, though he's mostly been hindered by that big guy with a boyband haircut and the first touch of Dave Lee Travis. Connolly for McGowan seems the obvious change to make. They don't look all that clever down the left, and we don't get a moral victory for losing by 1. |

United below par, though Dow looked ok, albeit too much on his own. Might have been different if the ref had given him a penalty, but there was little chance of that this weekend after last week. You don't get two in a row borderline decisions v them. Not a hope. I note that a Celtic foul consists of a Celtic player going down with an opponent in proximity. Some things in Scotland never change. McGowan booked for our first foul: Emilio not even talked to for the one on Dow shortly before it. Always the same. Terrible decisions though by Jackie to keep 10 on the pitch for about six or seven minutes during which they took the lead: you can't afford to faff about like that in a game; and by Dillon to make that stupid tackle. They've killed us today. I note we'll be without a left back on Wednesday as well with Dixon already out. Wonder if it'll be McGowan there? They'll do very well to get a close defeat midweek, even with Nadir back. Bilate largely a waste of space (some of the self-styled Hairy Cornflake's touches were more effective, I'm afraid, Naebs), as was Anier when he came on. None of that bodes well. Not a good day. Glad I didn't go though. |

In jackies defence, i don't think he expected Dillon to be off that long. He obviously decided enough was enough at one point, but Dillon returned just in time. Bilate was mostly pretty poor, but did cause them trouble on occasion. Anier just doesn't look up to scratch at all, did we give him a long contract or just to the end of the season? I hope its the latter. Dow was excellent for us, one of the best games I've seen him play. I thought in previous seasons that he wasn't good enough, but he really came on last season. Maybe he can step up and become a big player for us now. He should have won us a penalty, but Scott Brown can do what he likes. Dillon's was a classic example of winning the first challenge, rushing into a 2nd and then regretting it immediately. I've been a long term admirer of Dillons, but with his contract expiring and Dixon and McGowan now the full back options, I think it may be time to let him go and look towards other options, for example Souttar. What did folks think about the line up? Strategy looked pretty clear. Be difficult to break down, try and hit them on the counter, which we almost did a good few times, then have attacking options to bring on if we wanted to go for it later on. Could argue that other than when Dillon was off it worked well enough, or say that it was overly negative. Thoughts? |

Thought Dillon was unlucky. Clumsy rather than malicious. Went in hard for the ball, misjudged it by half a second and caught a trailing insole. Yellow would've sufficed. Their penalty looked light. Dow's would've been too, but it was a clear bump so there could've been no complaints. Understand why JMc played the team he did, but it didn't really work. Having two back-fours on top of each other meant there was no out ball, which made it a bit like a defence-vs-attack training session for them. Part of that was because Bilate never looked comfortable with his back to goal and could've been hooked after 10 minutes. Dow was good. Fojut did well, mostly, while Dixon and Morris did nothing much wrong. Likewise the midfield four; it's not their fault they can't run or pass. It's just a pity that the team was set up for a battle we expected to lose, because Celtic didn't look that clever whenever someone was running at them. I know it's a futile point, but Armstrong and GMS would've really made a difference today. |
