Anyone feeling the slightest scintilla of optimism for this visit to Hampden? No Ciftci, no Armstrong, no GMS. No signs recently that we have a clue what we're doing without the last two. If The Celtics are better than 1/10 I'm backing them. |

The thing is it isn't as simple as losing those two guys to Celtic. We played some dire stuff last season and earlier this one while we had them. We also had a decent run while they were both out of the team in August and September. Perhaps the signal selling them both gave to the players and - more crucially then we may realise - the fans is a bigger blow. Whatever has caused it they look directionless right now and players who were previously doing decent jobs - Paton, Dillon, Dow for example - seem like they've lost it. This is certainly the biggest test so far for the boss...it's easier to keep a winning team on the boil than it is to turn it round once the confidence has gone. |

I wouldn't be surprised if we played much much better against Celtic in the upcoming games. Don't expect us to win, but think we'll play better. I think that's one of the concerning factors right now - big occasions or after moments like going down to 10, the players react and show what they are capable of. Then, they put in performances like today and last week. The main worry against celtic is our defense - someone like Griffiths is going to cause us no end of problems with his movement. |

I was going to go with "snowball's chance in hell", but after seeing the Aberdeen result I can't be so optimistic. It'll be a relief if we lose by fewer than three. Because there's not much that could make things worse, we may as well go Full Brewster: McGowan Butcher Fojut Dillon ............ Paton Rankin .... Spittal Muirhead Dixon .................. Bilate |

My suggestion is Cierzniak Souttar McGowan Morris# Dixon Paton Butcher Erskine Telfer Connolly Bilate+ #if fit (if not Fojut) + Assuming Nadir banning (inevitable) Subs on: Dow (60min) Rankin (80min) Spark (85 min) |

Sure, but which chunt? We have miriad options for midfielders who'll lurk around the final third looking for the (seemingly mythical) defence splitter, but none who will put in a tackle. The idea of Telfer vs Brown doesn't make me any more optimistic about this game. |

The key is how hard the three behind Bilate/Ciftci work to close down the ball carriers- none of the Celtic back 4 are great passers and they won't have Armstrong or GMS as runners. They don't have to put in crunching tackles, just make them play the ball and Paton and Butcher can pick up the scraps. |

Honestly not making this up but I was just looking at the beeb text on Celtic St Johnstone and reading approvingly about Tommy Wright's positive but realistic attitude (even though I despise hijm for dissing United), checked the team sheets, noted Swanson was playing, thought a bit about how he was St Johnstone's GMS and that he could score when lo and behold 0-1 to St Johnstone just seconds later, scorer Swanson. |

Rather a strange feeling that a team with 2 ex United players is beaten by a team with 1. |

Good to see Armstrong and GMS have kept on being shit against St Johnstone. |

So, all we need to do to beat them is have an average team of players well drilled and organised. So we're half way there. |
