I don't grudge GMS moving on, I just thought it not impossible to work a mutually beneficial extension with a reasonable transfer fee release clause.

However a move to Celtic is remarkably short sighted career wise. kind of hoping that a Bournemouth Derby or Watford might yet persuade him to move to them with a bit of a fee for United

It'll make me weep (from the eyes!) to see GMS playing for The Celtics.

Good scouting job by Mark Wilson for them.

Again: how could it possibly be mutually beneficial?

I understand why GMS might favour Celtic over the bitier end of the Championship. When on form, he could look world class in any team that hogs posession and gets referee protection. He's more likely to get a move to the Premiership from Celtic than he is from Sheffield.

What does annoy is Celtic's public lobbying for GMS to sign a pre-contract agreement. It's graceless.

Looks like it's official, Celtic have announced GMS pre contract, arriving in the summer.

With a bit of luck, the bug he's had over the last 4 or 5 months will come back at the start of next Season.

Disappointing, but at least it means we've got him to the end of the season...we always knew he was leaving then. Hopefully he can now focus on the present and give 100% between now and summer.

Just think what he will do to whatever poor sod is cutting about at right back for us come next season.
Yuck.

CLUB STATEMENT
January 16, 2015

Dundee United accepts Gary Mackay-Steven’s decision to leave at the end of the season. The Club made several attempts to persuade the player to extend his contract, including an offer that would have made him one of the highest earners at Tannadice.

Our ambition for a successful season remains undiminished and Gary will play a part in this. We have no doubt that the player will continue to give his full commitment to Dundee United in our pursuit of success in every competition.

Hypothetically speaking, and unrelatedly, it'd be an interesting social experiment if Celtic were ever to sign the SPL's the first openly ... ah, never mind. It's none of my business.

Indeed, and if it's going to be Stephen O'Donnell we may have to shell out some cash to make sure we get him...

Partick Thistle have confirmed they have rejected a £30,000 offer from Blackpool for Dundee United target Stephen O'Donnell.

The 22-year-old right-back is out of contract in the summer.

I have to say, I never like those we made an offer that would have made him the highest earner quotes. It's petty, in my eyes.
We all know United wanted him to sign a new deal, it's a given that it would gave been pretty good.

And, speaking of hypotheticals, how about this: GMS scores the goal that wins United the title and the Champions League spot (or, more realistically, the goal that wins us the League/Scottish Cup and denies The Celtics the treble).
That would go down well.

Didn't Charlie Nicholas score a penalty in the shoot-out against Celtic in the 1990 Scottish Cup Final for Aberdeen when he already knew he was leaving to join the tinks? Fair dos, he did score.

Also Scott McDonald got both of Motherwell's in a 2-1 win in 2005 to make Rangers (RIP) the SPL winners and denying his future employers Celtic.

Hope GMS scores against them to win us a Cup.

Think your mibbee right about Nicholas, but in the case of Scott HackDonald, think it was the end of the following Season before there were bids from Ringers and Septic for him.
