I just hope that GMS doesn't do a 'Kalvanes' (who I thought was a fine player for us) when he said he wanted to go back home to Norway but signed for Burnley.

If GMS wants to go south (England) fine. But to sign for the minks would be a let - down.

Yeah, I think (if the £250k valuation is true) that we may have klutzed this.

In the nonsense leagues, players with six months left can still be valued at £10m. This, I guess, reflects the fact that managers are judged on their next result rather than next season. Six months more of GMS may not be worth that much to us in terms of rewards but, for a manager who's struggling, he's a potential lifeline; a very cheap one.

What are the chances of Delila getting sacked before the 2015/16 kickoff? And how many SPL goals could he get in six months from an on-form GMS who has ref protection, a thug at his back and two forwards in his range? If I were Ronnie, I'd have a cheque in the post by now.

Up to him, though, isn't it?

The suspicion is that he's really looked the part since the transfer window reopened...I reckon he's pretty keen to go. If he stays we risk a demoralised GMS playing back like he was in November. At least Celtic won't have him, I guess, but morale with him may be low, and his mates in the squad too. Would that hit us harder than losing GMS as he is now (as opposed to as he was before Christmas)?

It's nice to be nice to our players and help them get a move when they want to go. It's tough on the fans - I'd hate to see him play against us too - but it's sure to send a good message to the rest of the squad and all other young players thinking of signing for us.

Well, in that case, would it have done either party any harm to have an extension with a minimum bid clause?

It would demonstrate that we wouldn't have stood in his way and yet allow got some re-investment in the squad or more youth development.

What would be GMS's benefit?

?...........

Cobs is right about this IMO. He pretty much does eff-all for 4 or 5 months, then he's shining bright. Some sob story about him having a bug. What for 4 month. That's no a bug, that's a serious illness.

United and ST have ballsed up here. 250k to let him go. There's more than that to be had if we beat Aeberdeen in the semi, end up in either or both Cup finals, and get 3rd in the league, and we'll a better chance to do it with him, and less chance without. There is a 250k difference between some positions in the league.

Why limit it to four months? He drifted between mediocre and pish for the back half of last season, including the cup final, and only managed 27 league starts.

Guess he's been deliberately playing badly for about a year, because of reasons. It's the only possible explanation, since no one in history has ever had this "serious illness" thing of which you speak.

It looks like Celtic don't want to pay any money so he'll sign a pre-contract for next season according to Spence.

I take the points everyone has made about his form being very indifferent over the last 12 months, but when he's been on his game, he has been fantastic to watch and unlike any other Scottish player I've seen in the last decade. My wee boy really started getting into football after watching him play - and perhaps the trade off is you don't get a season of consistency?

What will be frustrating will be the sudden regular appearances in the Scotland squad, which I presume is part of the pre-contract?

That's fair enough. We got him for nothing, enjoyed some wonderful football and he can take his chances wherever he likes.

Ha! True enough, though I wouldn't have called him up during the last twelve months to be honest!

No, but he's got one cap in 2013. Has his form been worse than James Forrest during the time he's been here, given that the mediocre Celtic winger has 9 caps over the same period? We all know how it works.

I'd still be very happy to see him with us for the rest of the season.

I'd say that GMS has been the most talented attacking player we've had for a good 20 years. His form has mostly been good...just tailed off to the end of last season and only recently came back. Whether that's been a mental issue or genuine physical problem it doesn't matter as it amounts to the same thing: but he's owe us nothing at this point given what we've had out of him. All the best for the future young man!

Absolutely!
He, and we, can hopefully enjoy his final six months at Tannadice with the sort of form and skill that catapulted him onto a near-weekly slot on FootballAM!

And, indeed, nothing but good wishes to him for the future.

Agree on wishing him all the best if he does move. Hopefully he gets a good reponse from our fans, he deserves it.

Interesting that league one was the likely destination, sure he could have got a move to championship side easily season or so ago. And surely is more than capable of that level now.

He's certainly been the most exciting Scottish player I have seen (let alone United player) in the last 20 years, doing things with the ball in a match you would never expect. Given he has provided United with 4 seasons of entertainment (and hard work - I've never watched him and thought, try harder) he's entitled to go where he likes. I just really hope it's at the end of the season and not before.

As crazy as that pre-contract amount for Khedira sounds, you may have just hit upon an accurate indicator of value for players with 6 months on their contract Naebs.

Khedira's probably on £100,000 p/w, so £10M = 100 x his weekly wage.

GMS is probably on £2.5K per week, and hey presto, 100 x his weekly wage = £250,000. :piper:

That aside, I'll be slightly p'd off if GMS joins Celtic, Utd decided to hold onto him last summer with the knowledge that they weren't going to be able to afford a contract offer he would accept, so have probably been preparing for the strong likelihood of him going for nothing and wishing him luck in the Championship.

But to Celtic, hmm, that's not quite so easy to take for the fans or the club.... :fisted:
