He's consistently said for about a year he wants to go down south. So, will be see how easily he gives into temptation if Celtic go make a decent offer.

Jim Spence says we are to sign an as yet unnamed foreign striker tomorrow.

Twitter gobshites are suggesting Henri Anier, ex of Motherwell. Never prolific but a decent poacher. Not one to overcomplicate things.

I can't remember him. We could do with a poacher sometimes.

On the radio, Spence seemed to hint GMS might consider Celtic, Armstrong not so much.

And Wilson didn't seem best pleased about the way things have went since the infamous night out. Gave the 'i can't comment' talk on why wasn't picked recently and on much of the night out. Seems like there's still a lot of things about that night that could cause a few problems.

Re. GMS, I think that could be a potentially disastrous move (to sign a pre-contract).
It's not outwith the realms of possibility to imagine a situation where, by dint of scoring v The Celtics post-split, he denies them the title.
The Hooped masses would not be happy.

Why does anyone sign a pre contract? What's the advantage?

I guess it's the security of knowing that you have decent employment lined up, rather than gambling once you're not earning.
Being self-employed, I can understand that urge.
It's fine when you're working but, as you near the end of a contract the jitters start.
Jam today, and all that.

That's what I'd assumed, Reeks. But the case of Fojut -- signed on a pretty contract by Celtic then ditched again when he was injured -- suggests it offers no security at all.

I suppose that has to go down as an exceptional circumstance.
Generally, I'd assume that, barring injury or arrest, the club would have to honour the agreement, even if they'd brought in a new manager who didn't fancy you.
The Celtics really are twats, aren't they?

Not that exceptional, really: turned his knee on his final appearance in May, fully recovered and playing again by December. Yet the promise of job security was cancelled specifically because the player needed it.

If pre-contract agreements aren't an insurance policy, what are they?

They are in most cases. The % of pre contracts cancelled must be pretty low, due to injury or other factors.

Given the number of players who are without a club, even decent players, it must be reassuring and comforting to have things tied up for the future for a team you want to play for.

I'd assume it's unlikely GMS would sign for celtic (or any player would sign for a club) so quickly if he's has good indications of other interests, or he knows deep down it's not a good move for him.

But if he thinks both in a financial and football case, it's a good move, I can fully see the reasons why he'd be keen to remove the uncertainty, stress and distractions, and sign a pre contract.

Undoubtedly, they're heavily weighted in the buying club's favour.
Have a storming season and no-one else can swoop in at the end of May.
However, as with Fojut, do your cruciate and you get dropped like a hot stone.
As with so much in the business side of football, it makes little sense once it's put under any scrutiny.

Oh and @bbcjimspence says...

Dundee Utd will not let Gary Mackay Steven leave in the transfer window for any less than two hundred and fifty thousand pounds I'm told.

Looks like a come-and-get-him price to me, sadly.

Yup. I'd be much more content if I stopped thinking about things.

Case in point right there. The maths of this are ridiculous.

A. Estimate how much half a season of GMS is worth to you.
B. Estimate how much half a season of GMS might be worth to any buyer.
C. Estimate how much any buyer might be prepared to offer GMS as a signing-on fee to secure him next season instead.

If C minus B is greater than A then there's logic to making a price tag public.

So does C - B = > A? Umm ... Dunno. Let's just say £250k ... that sounds about right.

I'll be pretty pissed off if we sell him to The Celtics.
We'd basically be conceding that we can't challenge for the league and, after all the we don't need to sell guff, buckling at the first six-figure bid.

Honestly, what's the fucking point?

Wonder what the gameplan is here. GMS says he'd like to move South. Smelltic show an interest in him (they're more like West-South-West).

United aware of this interest pull a figure of 250k out of thin air (IMO 40% undervalued) and in doing so lay their cards on the table, and in a manner of speaking call Smeltic's bluff. Lets hope Smelltic don't call our bluff by puting in an offer.

Can see this ending up being a phuckin disaster for everyone concerned. GMS, United, and us. Everyone but Smelltic.
