Any thoughts on the EPL for 2014/15? I think Chelsea could win it, Man City surely will fade a touch. Can't see Man Utd putting in too strong a challenge unless they spend a lot, while Arsenal are just Arsenal. Liverpool will do well to keep up the same level as last year without main striker and the general pressure / lack of surprise. |

Meanwhile, further down the league, the Cardiff situation seems rather depressing, with nasty texts floating around from Malky Mackay and former Cardiff colleague Iain Moody, who has now resigned from Crystal Palace where Mackay was set to get a job. Bit like a checklist of offensiveness covered, not sure there's anyone not insulted. |

Can't see past Chelsea. Even when they had no chance of winning it last year they were only 4 points off 1st, were top with 5 games to go, and had much the best record in games against other top teams. Their defence is tight, they have added attacking options, and nobody else looke particularly stronger than last season at the moment. Having said all that, statto.com says Liverpool are available at 12/1 which seems generous. |

Strike that, they've just agreed a fee to sign the one man headline writing machine that is Mario Balotelli! The dancing banana is for the comedy gold that will ensue, and not necessary to indicate what the signing will do for their title chances...which are probably fairly slim based on their performance against Southampton on Sunday. Chelsea to win the league by 5 points from City. Arsenal and Liverpool to also finish in the top 4. Burnley, QPR and Crystal Palace to go down. Why did Cardiff leave it until Friday (the day after Pulis left Palace) to send in the dossier of racist, homophobic and sexist texts from Mackay and Moody when the former started to be heavily linked with the Palace job? Strange but interesting. |

I guess if you wanted to get revenge in a nicely timed, long drawn out way, this was it. Say nothing, make him apologise and drop his legal action, wait until he's thinks he's about to get a job, and then stick the knife in. Just like a Bond villain. |

Will certainly be interesting. Can't help but think best place for Balotelli is a club, supporters and manager who'll stand by him where he can concentrate on his game. Maybe that's liverpool , or maybe not. |

It's incidents like this that show how far football still needs to go in many ways. First the LMA describes it as "friendly text message banter" , for only 2 of the messages, not sure which of the ones reported were not worth apologising for. Then they have to withdraw it and apologise for the apology. Then Harry Redknapp says Mackay is a fantastic man.
Not like he's done anything bad, like kill someone, or taken a bribe or bung or anything, so it's all fine. |

Yep, it's a sorry tale all round. The Redknapp line of defence is ridiculous, but you wouldn't expect much better from him as you say. |

And in the meantime, Liverpool are signing Balotelli just so long as he provides assurances that he will behave himself and show commitment. Isn't his propensity to misbehave already factored into his reducing price tag, from £24m arriving at ManCiti to £19m to Milan to £16m to Liverpool, despite a tremendous goal haul for a struggling Milan team last season. Anyway, for £120k per week, who wouldn't say - "Yup, I assure you I fully intend to be committed and behave myself well. Would you also like me to play well, score goals? Cool. I promise to try to do that to. We good? OK. Where do I sign?" |

To be honest after scoring 12 goals in 13 Serie A games in the half season after he signed from City, his 1st full season at Milan wasn't that special (think he scored 14 goals in 30 league goals) and probably explains why Milan are happy to sell him. He was also pulled off at half time on a yellow card against a Costa Rica in the WC, allegedly because he refused to give any assurances that he wouldn't do anything stupid and get sent off. Mourinho's tells a similar story when he managed him at Inter. The point remains though that when he's motivated and happy he's got the potential to be a special player. |

If anyone missed it as I had, there are still a few days to watch the first ever Match Of the Day from 1964. A whole 50 mins of highlights from 1 game. iPlayer link Notable: Both teams apparently line up 2-3-5 Don Howe and Ronnie Moran playing. The ball weighs a ton. Terrifying packed terraces - see surge at 14:50 Ron Yeats Commentator Wolstenholme referring to the "Spion Kop" |

Innaresting link vvhatsthat, having read David Peace's excellent Red or Dead recently it's good to put some faces to (otherwise little known) names in Shankly's Liverpool team. Just realised after Googling him that the Gordon Wallace scoring for Liverpool isn't Dundee's Gordon Wallace as well. The other thing that always strikes you about old matches is how different defending was when you could pass back to the keeper. For a game that hasn't changed that much rules wise for 50-100 years that one certainly had a fairly massive impact. |

Poor Man U, beaten 4-0 against MK Dons, with a side that while a reserve side should have been very comfortable. I'm sure it's all just Van Gaal's plan to make sure the board spend even more. Even with another two 50m signings, they might struggle though. |

Malky Mackay gets a new job at Wigan, even though the whole nasty text message thing hasn't concluded and there's still an investigation ongoing. Are Wigan really that desperate they think it's worth the hassle that might come their way? |
