On that form, Celtic will beat every other team in the league. Possibly not by six, though. If we had a Flood or a Gomis (v1 versions) on the pitch we wouldn't have conceded possession so cheaply. But that's not how United play these days and, for 10 games out of 11, that's probably a good thing. Losing Armstrong was a disaster. Replacing him with Bilate was a mistake. Once the team's flogged three goals from individual errors it's fair for heads to drop. They're only human. Six points against last year's top three and a goal difference of -1 isn't too bad. Ach well. Move on. |

I think that we didn't play much differently than prevously, when we could have won 1-0, had not been for their late goal. I'm not overly bothered about the defeat, but we need to tighten up at set pieces, or it'll really cost us, especially if we lose goals so early. |

Definitely. I really should stop reading about united online (elsewhere), it's a miserable experience that takes away any new season enthusiasm. I think we all like a good moan, but I think the only enjoyment some people get from supporting united is calling out their least favorite players and then shouting as loud as possible each week there's the slightest excuse to prove themselves right. While it's fresh in the memory ... Cz: hesitant at the wrong moments, punched a few times when he shouldn't and misjudged a few crosses. Flogged the fifth. Had a couple of decent stops though. Watson: wasn't given a moment to breathe. Uncomfortable. Morris: allowing for the scoreline, he didn't do much wrong. Looks a decent player. Fojut: okay, but caught a few times doing dumb stuff. Suspect he might be the type who's considered better than he is because of how he looks and acts; a De Vos. Townsend: unmistakably ordinary. Seemed five yards behind the pace on counter attacks and didn't really impose himself when defending. On this evidence, he's no Robertson. Rankin: MIA. Paton: had a stinker. Dow: dragged way too deep to make any kind of difference. Armstrong: offered the only reliable outball and was able to find space. Very unfortunate injury, hopefully not a broken toe. GMS: good before Armstrong went off, then was undersupplied. Ciftci: busy, but isolated and outplayed by a standard of defender he doesn't have to deal with much. Bilate: worryingly clumsy. Erskine: plain. Spittal: no idea. Celtic: good. Not great, and needless to say we helped out by flogging goals exactly when it hurt us most. But Celtic's entire front four are dangerously direct and the midfield holds the line effortlessly. The lack of Brown may have been a positive, as there was less fight and more control. Defence looks disorganised at times though individually they have the quality to clean up mistakes as soon as they happen. They'll with the league by 30 points again and are probably a decent bet against Malmo. ETA: Maribor. Mallorca. Malcolm Muggeridge. Whatever. Edited by Naebody, Aug 16 2014, 03:42 PM.

Out at kids football this afternoon, I had the dubious pleasure of being informed the score by a crowing Celtics fan whom I'd spent the last week telling how Utd were finally going to win at CP... |

Well, I had a good day at least. Started out poorly but got progressively better. The third piece was by far the best. Full of vigour and life, and with excellent performances (although that should be mitigated by the fact that the first was a fairly plodding affair). The middle piece was a bit of a mess first-half but really picked up in the second. Overall: ambitious, which is to applauded, but lacking the sort of keen direction needed to pull off a truly great cycle of plays. |

Oh dear. Of all the times a thrashing at Celtics Park would be expected, this wasn't it. Two winnable games next - in fact every game is winnable this season now that we've beated Aderbeen away. |

I am thoroughly confident we'll have 18 points from a possible 21 by the time we are set to face St Johnstone at the end of next month. The aim for next Saturday against Ross County is to re-establish our goal difference. |

There were many things wrong clearly, but I feel a lot of this is down to our goalkeeping right now. Czersniak flapped at plenty in the first two games, and at the end of last season, cup final not withstanding. Some of those corners were embarrassingly shambolic. |

Hm. First one: absurdly bad header from Fojut (I think) when it was easier to clear. Defender's mistake. Second one: exceptionally good front post cross. Paton and/or Rankin outmuscled. Impossible for any keeper not capable of teleportation. Third one: Paton robbed, 1-on-1. Can't expect any keeper to stop those. Fourth one: freak goal. Keeper stays on his line expecting someone from either side to connect with the cross; no one does; sneaks in at the back post. Hit 100 like that and 99 will end up a goal kick. Fifth one: deep back-post corner, impossible to catch unless you're 12 feet tall. No sign of Townsend to clear. Ball bumped back into the middle. No sign of Fojut or Morris to clear. Free header. Sixth one: yet another diagonal ball across the box. Keeper kicks a sclaff shot he probably could've caught and -- inevitably -- the loose ball falls to them lot. The biggest criticism of Cz is that he comes for crosses and misses them (which he did once in the game, by memory). In this case, he stayed on his line for all the goals lost. For the first, the second and the fifth, staying put and trusting the defence looked the right decision. In that context, I find the constant criticism of Cz a bit spurious. |

I think we got done by the old american football style blocking, as Morris was blocked by one of their other players, which meant he couldn't clear the ball well and lost his man. Otherwise it's hard for me to say if we should change keeper, as I'm unsure of our options. McCallum doesn't seem ready says McNamara. Szromnik I've no idea on. It'd be a risk changing a relatively good keeper in average form for someone who we've no idea is any better. But McNamara should have a better idea. |

Indeed, and that's the other problem. Celtic cheat -- or rather, they can get away with more cheating because of a home crowd and an aura of superiority. Refs give them the benefit of the doubt. See also the one they pinged off the bar (offside, not given) versus the one we had in the net (not offside, given). Assymetric refereeing isn't why we lost. But it is a reason why that damn fixture always carries a sense of futility. |

I disagree, I think the criticism of Cz is pretty fair and based on his performances in 2014. He flapped a lot in the first two games, so certainly Celtic was no worse than he has performed, but when the ball comes into areas where he has to make a decision, there seems to be a lot of uncertainty. Certainly that may be down to playing behind centre backs in Gunning and Soutar last season, who quite often made questionable decisions themselves. But I think his decision making has been questionable for a while. Equally, that is maybe what we should expect of a SPFL level goalkeeper - the odd great save and cross taking inter-spersed with flaps and poor decisions. |

It's funny. I remember Pernis having the same accusations levelled at him. And Zaluska, who is now lamented as a bench warmer, being referred to as Flappy Z. All good keepers, with the only constant being a ropey defence in front of them. In short, Czersniak may be wobbly but he's doing the best he can behind a defence that, oftentimes, resembles the proverbial spilled box of Maltesers. |

Let's hope it was the kryptonite effect of Celtic Park that made our defence look so ropey, as on the basis of the 1st 2 weeks there had been genuine reasons for optimism in that department? Still, at least we still get the same 0 points for a 6-1 loss to the Celtics as we do when we're robbed in the last minute by a dodgy decision by the b*stard in the green.... Onwards and upwards. |
