Well, normally I'd agree on starting GMS. But it seems he played against Qatar's U23 side yesterday.

Really? Really.

He's been out of sorts for most of 2014, and fact that he played in that game suggests to me something's still up. I'd very much like to be wrong about that though.
Typically cool finish though. I'd literally throw him on in the second half as our version of David Fairclough excepting that GMS can finish.

Yep, it's not a great time to be playing the Sheep, though perhaps Thursday's 2nd leg tie will take a bit out of them physically and mentally. Let's hope so.

There should be reasons to be optimistic around the team, but it feels like the ko of the season's come a couple of weeks too soon for new signings to gel and injuries to heal etc.

Let's hope GMS plays, as with Robertson and Gauld's attacking spark missing from the team I think we're going to be reminded about how important a player he is for us in the coming weeks.

1-1 hopefully...
Well if they're playing Thursday that will take plenty out of them. A draw at least then.

Not really getting the Aberdeen love-in.
Most would agree that they were stuffy and functional last season, grinding out a lot of 1-0 wins. They haven't really changed much, other than bringing in Goodie.
We needed to shore up our central defence and we have.
We've swapped one inexperienced, youthful left-back for another and have Keef still at right-back.
He, Paton, Armstrong and Çiftici are all a bit more experienced and wiser.
Plus, we have exciting new options in midfield and up front.

In short, less of the doom-and-gloom, ladies!
Robertson certainly wasn't the finished article as a defender. One might even say successfully targeted on May 17th.

Ditto. Barry Robson will be 63 36 in November, Clangers remains first choice keeper and they have frees from Brentford and Tranmere shoring up the defence. Rooney still looks a player but we've no evidence Goodwillie will ever remember he's one. I'd expect Aberdeen to be around the top-six cutoff point this year.

However, it seems improbable that our new back four could already have figured out how to set an offside trap. In those circumstances, having McGinn run at two nervy, heavy-set fullbacks making their competitive debuts doesn't fill me with confidence.

Is it on telly, by the way? Alba, perhaps?
Langfield had a good 2013-2014.

I hope we just defend and take our at least one chance. GMS as a second half sub and scorer in an ill deserved 1-0 United victory.

I reckon a 1-1 draw. Rooney for them; Ciftci for us.

After taking over 1000 fans to Leeds, it looks like another decent support at Shitodire with only 200 tickets left.

Watching the game last night, Aberdeen put a lot into that and they will surely be affected by it.

I also think that Aberdeen squad has a bit of age in it that we should be able to take advantage of. But a lot depends on what sort of back four we end up with. We should certainly be good enough for the draw.

[Boring betting post]

Long United at 4.0 (because you never know). Long a penalty at 3.45 (because Willie Collum). Resisting putting anything on Goodwillie to score (because surely, surely, the gods of irony won't be that predictable).

No surprises, surprisingly.

.................... Cierzniak
Watson, Morris, Fojut, Townsend
............. Rankin Paton
..... Dow, Armstrong, GMS
..................... Ciftci

Utd subs: McCallum, Erskine, Bilate, Telfer, Spittal, Graham, Smith

ETA: so Rangers/Hearts kicked off at 1.30, meaning the game overlaps with a televised one for 20 minutes or so? Eh? Isn't that not meant to happen?

Think that makes sense. Want midfield to be settled and help the defense, not concede early.

And we've Graham / Bilate to put on if we need a goal.

If we need a goal then Graham won't be the answer. He might be on after Bilate in order to latch onto some Hail Mary balls in the last few mins.

... And closed at 1.72. No reason to get greedy.

ETA: penalty bet doesn't look so clever though.

Oh we of little faith.

Comfortable away win for table-topping tangerines as dismal Dons slump to defeat.

Not bad for a team who just sold £5m worth of young talent...
