United sign New Keeper

Know there's a Squad change thread, but thought there should be a New Thread for a New Keeper. Besides thought it was about time for a new thread, so there.

Manager Jackie McNamara said: "I see Michal coming in and challenging for the number one jersey immediately."

That's a strong message to send to our current occasional blunderer on the goal line.

Presumably the laddie who made in debut against the Dons at the tail end of the season can now go out on loan to get some games under his belt. Mind, less easy than with an outfield player to find a club where he would get an almost guaranteed first team slot.

Well that seems to signal the end for McCallum, give we've now got 3 keepers as well as having McGovern and Zwick in the U20s.

At least he got one chance, but seems to be in the Hilson category of being around for too long in the reserves.

He looks serious anyway.

Everyone's a smart Alec..eh? Can I point out that now we are debt free we should endeavour to stay that way and to stop splashing the cash to just sign players because we can..

Well, Zeek, there's no evidence that's happening. Clearly, Thompson is giddy about getting £5m through the door (albeit with ~£4m going straight out again). But his spending spree has been on oversized Graco car seats for the dugout, a mural on the breezeblocks and a Polish U21 keeper who looks like one of the Bash Street Kids. Compared with last year, when we spunked several hundred thousand on Goodwillie while running a £1m overdraft, that seems frugal.

The squad's too big, clearly, by about six. (McCallum, Butcher, Wilson, Gardyne, Erskine and Oyanougat, should you require names.) It'd be nice to get some of them out. But their wages are unlikely to represent the cost that tips us back into penury. Chill, Zeek. Chill.

There's something about these seats I really dislike.

Apart from looking out of place and being largely pointless, it's like some cheap fashion statement 10 years too late.

Yeah, they also send entirely the wrong message. Those who are paying to get in are plonked on a plastic flipdown tray with barely enough legroom for Ella Fitzgerald. The employees, meanwhile, can't suffer such discomforts so each get a personal Laz-Z-Boy to slump in soporifically, like they're at watching Anchorman 2. Completely fuck that. We pay their wages. If we have to suffer, so should they.

An explanation from Jackie Mc, perhaps he's being kind, but it seems there's still a chance for McCallum to stake a place next year?

Meanwhile, United are set to put goalkeeper Marc McCallum out on loan now they have signed Pole Michal Szromnik.

McCallum featured prominently for the team during pre-season but it will be left to Szromnik to fight with compatriot Rado Cierzniak for the No 1 spot.

“Marc McCallum has been exceptional in pre-season for us and we have high hopes for him,” said McNamara.

“I just felt that we wanted to get Marc more games. Last season he was unfortunate that he didn’t play often.

“Michal has played 60-70 games and for Poland’s under-21s so has that little bit more experience than Marc.

“So with Marc we feel we want to put him out on loan, get some game time and then come back and push for a place here next season.

“There is nothing in the pipeline but we are looking for somewhere suitable.”

Makes sense in some ways, he's not going to be first choice here, but can't help but feel it would have been better to do this last season.

Although, there are only five seats. I assume one if Jackie's; DJ will get one and so will Simon Donnelly. Looks like the players themselves have been relegated to that harsh looking wooden bench at the back.

That'd be acceptable. So long as they're not on those bloody pitchside exercise bikes. They're the worst.

From memory, McNamara doesn't even sit down much.

They must also restrict the players view from the plank. I'd rather they were watching the game than seeing an advert for 70 mins before they come on.
