You could be right about Belgium as they're very inexperienced at tournament level and will miss Benteke up front for his all round link up play as well as his goals.

As for Portugal, Ronaldo apart they don't score enough goals (and their defence isn't great either), not one for presuming that a player can't go on to have a good career if they don't do well in the EPL, but jeez they've still got Helder Postiga as their main Striker(even if he had a good qualifying campaign)....
Having looked into Belgium a bit further before having a splurge, the reliance on a striker the manager doesn't fancy, and his possible injury, is making me cool significantly on them.
I reserve the right to be a total hypocrite when it comes to World Cup predictions.....

Spent most of last night doing my Fantasy Team and (mainly because they're both underpriced) I've wound up with both Lukaku and Postiga in my group of 5 forwards....though Postiga could still be dropped for Kokorin from Russia.....(FYI because you can't make any subs during the Group phase, and an unlimited amount thereafter, there's no point in picking a team of players that you think will actually do well beyond the Group Phase)

For those interested in an in depth analysis, Zonal Marking's got team by team guides up now (and unlike the other guides they probably won't mention CR7's favourite hairgel): http://www.zonalmarking.net/category/world-cup-2014/

Alternatively, you have two days left to watch Danny Baker's World Cup clipshow on BBC4. There's a lot of gold in there, not least the 1966 buildup news report at approximately 28 minutes.

Note: please don't take this as an invitation to discuss whether or not you like Danny Baker because, frankly, I couldn't give even the smallest of fucks.

There's certainly some gold there Naebs, in particular this tartan army fan who I'm hoping someone at least had the decency to share the royalties with for every "See You Jimmy" hat ever sold….

So, anybody think Croatia can spring a surprise tonight, even without Mandzukic?

Anybody watching the game somewhere exotic/unusual?

Any fantasy football player tips or bets being placed?

Come on it's the World Cup! :banjmp:

I luv the early games in the World Cup. The anticipation is probably higher that the actual fare on offer but here's hoping...

Anyway, been a Brazil fan since at least 1970 and always tip the boys who play 'the beautiful game' to be the eventual winners.

Croatia will be no push over. They never are.

2-0 Brazil

BTW The onset of the World Cup always brings a little strain and tension in the Arafat household. :dundeefan: Christ! is only once every 4 years. :hit:

I reckon 2-0 Brazil. Neymar and Fred. What is it with the names of the Brazilians? Fred, Jo, Bernard, Oscar, Victor and Maxwell. Jonathan from Inter is not in the squad.

Just found out many of the games will be at 11pm. This means I'll be able to watch a few games. \o/

It also means I'll be half asleep, quite drunk, and gambling carelessly on the in-game odds of two teams I don't have a single scoob about.

Did you set up a league, Clarkie?

Oh, happy world cup day, everyone!

Really looking forward to it.
Just watching at home tonight but on Saturday, for England v Italy, I'll be in Bedford, which boasts a massive Italian community. Noice.

Home win tonight. Two, possibly three, goals for Brasil.

Didn't we beat Croatia home and away in the qualifying? Cant see them doing anything against Brazil then.

Brazilian player names must be based on a belief that edwardian English names bring success just like the Dutch with their great team of Winston, Clarence, Edgar etc.

I entered a team but haven't set an arab league up. Will join one if its set up. Really hard to pick a squad of 23 players who play unless you are an expert on Iranian football .

Good match so far.
Croatia tidy on the ball, using the space left by the Brazilian full-backs well.

Ref robbed the Croats there. However as I have Neymar (cpt) and Oscar in the fantasy league, plus some money on Brazil to win and neymar to score (anytime) I'm pretty chuffed.

Decent match that barely made me regret not watching The Good Wife.

How lucky for Brasil that several important refereeing decision went in their favour.

Lucky indeed.
While I thought the free-kick for Cesar was justified, the penalty was ridiculous.
A blatant piece of play acting.
Funny hearing Lee Dixon take Vieira to task about his, "that's the game we play" comment.
"It's not the game I played!", harrumphed Dixon.
No, Lee, I thought, you just went around smashing opposition players.
