World Cup starts a week today.

Can anyone see past the hosts as winners?

How long before England fly home?

Are the stadiums ready?

Spain or Brazil or Argentina or Germany. Can't see anyone else winning it.

England to go out in the Group Stage. Magic.

Stadia will be fine.

Can't wait for the closing-credits montage. Can't wait to see Wayne Rooney grimacing in slow motion like a confused potato. Can't wait to hear the mood of the nation summed up with pictures of glum kids in facepaint while some mid-charting melancholy acoustic doggerel drones on in the background. Will it be Editors? Or Ben Howard? Ellie Goulding, perhaps? Or Nick Mulvey? How about Elbow? Seriously: can't wait. It's the highlight of my World Cup.

Since I have just drawn Brazil in the work sweepie it can safely be assumed that Argentina will lift the trophy.

Looking forward to loads of replays of "vindaloo " as Suarez piles on the goals.

I got Japan in the works sweepstake so I guess the money is mine :(

Betting wise I've gone for Belgium to reach the last four, and taken a punt on giroud to be top scorer (125-1) . France looked like they had an easy group and Torres got golden boot last time round.

Anybody fancy some world cup fantasy football?

You cant pick your team until the 8th for some reason.

Yep, I'm all over that as well Clarkie, spent most of last night identifying players to pick using the very handy Fantasy Football Scout guides:

http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/category/world-cup-2014/

Because of an interest in Italian football I'll probably be obliged to support them, but they've not won in 7 games since qualifying, their defence is creaky, they've not got that much pace in the team and you could easily see them losing to England......(who might just do quite well if Roy gives their younger creative players like Sterling, Lallana, Barkley and Oxlade-Chamberlain significant playing time).

If Argentina can overcome their deficiencies in defence they'd be favourites (look at their attack: Messi, Higuain, Aguero, Lavezzi!!), as there could be too much pressure on Neymar due to the lack of real class up front for Brazil elsewhere, Spain are possibly in decline and Germany have only taken one out and out attacker and he's 35! :ermm:

Darkhorse (there's always one or two) could be Colombia even without Falcao?

Somebody always picks Colombia as a dark horse. Pele might even have picked them as favourites once.

Germany for me, then Brazil, then Belgium. Spain seem a little rickety and most of their players have had very intense exhausting seasons.

Happy to oblige then. :hat:

Pele is nothing if not polite depending on who is asking the questions, pretty sure he picked Nicky Butt as one of the players of the tournament in 2002....

Just got Argentina in the (admittedly limited) work sweep. I'll take that.

Well now Reus is out, that's my team got a hole in it.

Bit of a blow for Germany too.

Might lay Belgium. Too hypey.

Portugal, fixed at 29-1, looks generous given they're basically Brazil's other host team. What am I missing?

You could be right about Belgium as they're very inexperienced at tournament level and will miss Benteke up front for his all round link up play as well as his goals.

As for Portugal, Ronaldo apart they don't score enough goals (and their defence isn't great either), not one for presuming that a player can't go on to have a good career if they don't do well in the EPL, but jeez they've still got Helder Postiga as their main Striker(even if he had a good qualifying campaign)....

Advice Disclaimer: All the above could turn out to be garbage and shouldn't be relied on if financial transactions are involved.

The real-money odds are a bit funny. There's very little between the top four (Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Spain) then a massive dropoff to the second tier (Belgium, England, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and Uruguay), which are all bunched together in the high 20s. That looks wrong. Life's rarely that predictable, particularly over three games.

A smelly bedroom punter could probably guarantee a return by shorting tier one and going long on tier two. But that's too dull. So: selling Spain at 8 and buying Italy at 28.

Having looked into Belgium a bit further before having a splurge, the reliance on a striker the manager doesn't fancy, and his possible injury, is making me cool significantly on them.
