Was it no wee Jim that sayed "We really are just a coarner shop".
With respect, Wee Jim was a complete fullcling idiot. Football clubs are nothing whatsoever like grocery shops. That he saw things this way is a demonstration of his financial illiteracy.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised to hear young Ryan discussed on five live tonight.
I switched it on while making supper (some prawns fried in butter, with garlic and chilli, served on a bed of steamed asparagus, since you ask) and found Waddle's comments enlightening.
Basically, more young players should head abroad instead of collecting a wage while playing for the reserves.
He did also mention it was a tough slog though. Potentially quite lonely and with the danger of isolation if you didn't try to assimilate.
Craig Brewster was similarly effusive, if cautious, about moving abroad. He loved playing in Greece but had been a lot older when he moved. A younger player might find it a little more taxing.
Good luck to Gauld, I say.

I think what might be good is that some of the pressure will be off him. For us, he was expected to produce each game as well as develop. I'm sure with less expectation of immediate impact in portugal, he can continue to develop as a player and settle and gain experience of being overseas.

Not that he can relax, but a different type of pressure now.

Absolutely.
Here, it's about whether he's first team material. With all the brick bats that come with it.
There, he's a talent to be nurtured.

Wha? He'll have less pressure now that someone's paid £3m for him and he's moved to a massive foreign club at 18?

In his place, I would be terrified.

No word on whether we have first refusal on buying him back?

Chris Waddle is always forthright and talks a lot of sense, he's certainly been way more enlightening than the chummy all boys club of Lineker, Shearer, Hansen and Savage etc this WC.

Think what will help Gauld is that Sporting have a B team that plays in the Segunda Liga: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013%E2%80%9314_Segunda_Liga

I could be wrong, but with the 1st team squad Sporting have he may not even make that many appearances for the 1st team this season anyway despite his fee?

In his favour, Portuguese is pish easy. Any fucking idiot could learn it in a morning, even with the telly on in the background.

That's true. Even Brazilians can learn Portuguese, and they're dumb as salt. Seriously, name a Brazilian intellectual. Or a Brazilian academic. Or any Brazilian at all (apart from Paulo Coelho) who's reached the top by doing something other than kicking a ball or modelling a frock. It's no accident that Brazil's most lasting influence on the world is in the field of pubic topiary.

DUNDEE UNITED are on the trail of giant Mansfield centre-half Ryan Tafazolli. SunSport understands Jackie McNamara has already had one bid knocked back for the 6ft 5in ex-Southampton man.

Well, £3m and surely a deal...

£250k for GMS is a bit cheap though, unless it's the stunt double gary.

It's Gary Mackay-Stephen they're after, whoever he is. Strange coincidence though.

Were it for the Gary Mackay-Steven that plays for Dundee Utd and wants another tilt at the English Premiership, I'd think Barnsley would not be the obvious launching pad for such a move. Some might suggest that playing on at a club with their eyes on a top four finish in Scotland, with a stream of young internationalists emerging and who have just sold their star prospect to Sporting fucking Lisbon of all people, well, some might suggest such a course of action would be more likely to see them end up in the desired destination.

Awright ya arab radgies :holein1: How's it danglin?
I was sorry to see Gauld leave last week, out of the blue... but it was a good deal which worked out well for everybody. I don't think McNamara will let go of Robbo so easily though, what he brings to the team isn't as replaceable. I'm sure Mac and Thommo will be dwellin on it, Robbo can't go for any less than 3 million. And with these kinda funds comin in i'd expect a hefty whack of that to be given to Mac to strengthen the gaps left by the guys that left.

Looks like we're not getting Tafazolli.
