Must be time for a summer transfer thread...

First one is twitter says we're after rangers young midfielder Charlie Telfer. Who I've not heard off, but rangers fans seem upset at potentially losing him.

Paddy McCourt has been released by Barnsley. What do you think? Should we try and sign him?

Aberdeen have done not too bad with an irish winger who wasn't the best with Celtic.

Think workrate and fitness was celtic fans main concern with him, but not sure of his current status on either.

Charlie Telfer deal still on, apparently. He's out of contract, but a delicious wrangle over compensation is in the offing as United argue his employers have only been in existence for two years so are due much less compo than The Ibrox Club claim.

I wonder how quickly we will be paying any compensation to the Ibrox Club, once the final amount is due. Y'know, bearing in mind how the entity from that location dealt with us in the past...

I'm sure the cashflow of such a massive institution will regard such trifling sums as pocket change.

Interesting.

Quote:

A season ticket holder at Ibrox, Telfer was overwhelmed by the chance to join the club.

... and, one assumes, overwhelmed by the chance to leave again.

Originally used as a winder on his arrival ...

Yeah, well. Perhaps they should've used him as a footballer instead.

How much compensation is usually due a third-tier club when a team signs an out-of-contract player who's made one substitute appearance?

Apparently, we've offered £50k for Telfer, but they've rejected it.

They must be flush with cash.

Assuming there's a fairly standard calculation for the compensation due in these circumstances.

What if nobody is prepared to pay it? Does the player have to accept the offer from Sevco to avoid being unemployed until he turns 24 and youth development compo expires?

While this is total speculation, I'd assume it works similar to the Jason Scotland travesty, with both parties having to agree to abide by the decision of the committee before the process starts.

Actually, wasn't there a transfer-fee panel in operation pre Bosman? Didn't we once get dicked over regarding the estimated value when signing Scott Crabbe or Paddy Connolly or someone like that?

Surely if a player wants to leave, and has no contract, he can't be forced into limbo if his old team decides so. Or if they can, the compensation needs to be sorted quickly.

There seems to be a caveat that by virtue of offering him a new contract, they are entitled to compensation.
Which is fair enough.
Quite how much compensation we'll be due should be interesting.

I think we asked for a million for darren jackson, hibs offered 200,000 so we got 400,000 instead of 600,000

There was a perfectly adequate solution to the transfer tribunal problem which could have averted Bosman and the horrors it has caused in European football.

Team A asks for £1m, Team B offers £100,000. Rather than picking a value somewhere in between as a tribunal usually did, they pick the most reasonable valuation. So, if the player in question is Billy Dodds then you might get £1m for him in his pomp. If it's Darren Dods and you ask a million then you're going to get the £100,000 and be happy with it. Would encourage both clubs to value players realistically.
