, Rangers didn't embarrass themselves collectively. They embarrassed themselves individually instead.

Thought United's plan of patient possession to take the heat out of the game worked well for the first 20 minutes. You could see the players deliberately slowing things down to avoid it turning blood and thunder. Unfortunately, this seemed to settle Rangers as much as United, and they had more muscle in the middle. When it came to step up a gear and start passing through them, every single ball ended up as a meaty 50-50 and it turned into a quagmire. In the end, they raised their game and we barely played ours. Both teams were gifted three goals and we were lucky they only scored one of theirs.

Shame.

Oh well, they'll have another go next year.

Maybe.

Tom English on the BBC gives the game an entirely accurate writeup, most importantly in acknowledging that we were meh. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27004758

Certainty not our best performance, but I think we did enough to win. It was about the chances, we took ours, they didn't.

A lot of pressure from Rangers, they did play quite well, got the ball forward and unsettled our defence while in the second half winning most things in midfield, stopping us playing.

Still, some good finishes a bit of luck and we're through.

Defence was a bit shakey. Surprised Wilson started, and not surprised he was taken off, he was having a poor game attacking and defensively.

Souttar the odd mistakes, but I think his passing approach did us well, and he cleaned up nicely at the back a few times.

Rakin and Paton did well, didn't stop working and tried to get us passing. Second half they were a bit overrun, but just held it together.

Armstrong I thought once more look our best player going forward, pace, movement and passing that opened them up. And nice finish too.

GMS and Cifrci I thought were in and out of the game. Few moments of quality that nearly got us further ahead, a few slack moments.

Gauld was ok, plenty effort and nice passing, but a few things went astray.

Ref I thought was poor. The kind of performance where I can't recall any major decicion going against us, but about every minor one seemed to, with the slightest contact being penalised for us, while pushed and trips for them were ignored.

Overall, not a easy game to watch, but the right result.

Ref I thought was okay, though perhaps that's because I had low expectations. Probably should've had a penalty when Ciftci went down, and Black could've walked long before the tangle with Armstrong that finally got him booked. There was also a leniency towards late and petulant stuff from the opposition, a lot of which was happening off the ball. Rangers played like they were angry at us. Perhaps they should have been angry with themselves. Until next time, take care of yourselves, and each other.

The worst one seemed to be Foster's late one, which I also think was on Armstrong. But I felt there was 3-4 clear fouls on united players what were ignored. And twice he could have played advantage but pulled our break back.

Still, I won't complain too much. Main thing is no bookings for united players. Probably only Rankin came close.

Wasnt the game I expected it to be. Thought it was gonna be more one-sided from our perspective. For large periods of the game thought they dominated the midfield.

Ref was mince. Black shouldve been off. Seemed to give them free-kicks for everything going, but our lads were knocked off the ball and nothin.

True they blew their chances and we took ours. So although it wasnt the game I expected, the result was.

From what I read, their fans are all laying the blame at Sally's door, and the doors of Daly, Black, Law, Shiels, Foster, Pochahontas, Simple Simonsen etc etc which is very good.

The first fifteen minutes and then the second half until the third goal was excruciating.
The early game malaise/patient play seems to be becoming a feature.
Once we started moving the ball around with pace we looked like the superior team.
The reversion to hacking it clear in the dodgy passage of the second period was very frustrating.
But we won and the difference in quality was there to see: they skewed their chances wide, we buried ours.
If GMS won't sign an extension, I really hope we let him see out his contract.
This team could be even better next season.

Thank you agent Daly.
Someone on EastFud has been nice enough to make my favourite moment into a gif. Namely: McCulloch tries to assault Rado and ends up getting kneed in the face by Daly.

Watch Daly and tell me he doesn't do that intentionally. He's a good lad.

I can't believe that's not a penalty to Rangers any more. What's the world coming to?
