Either McNamara or Thompson said they worried about how the players would react if the bids were turned down, which suggested the Armstrong would somehow not perform over the coming months or cause problems. Which to me seems nonsense. As well as seemed a pretty professional type, it doesn't seem to be in his interest to turn off for the coming months, since his options in future are going to lessen if he does. And he's not likely, unless he's incredibly stupid, do nothing for the next 18 months waiting for his contract to end. GMS, who already had his move to celtic and was in mixed form, I can understand the desire to move him on more. But again, doesn't seem in his interest to underperform. |

Okay, to recap ... We sign players on three-year deals. If the player does exceptionally well in the first year, we'll offer them an extension. If the player doesn't accept that extension, he has at most a further six months left before being sold to the highest bidder. However, because the club has already signalled that it doesn't keep players on the books with less than 18 months remaining, the highest bidder has no reason to pay a premium. Identifying yourself as a forced seller is a very weak negotiating position. All it does is pull forward the problems we associate with having 12 months remaining. The strategy also means that a three-year deal is in effect an 18 month deal with a reward for failure. There's an attempted disposal if you outperform in the contract front half, which means the only players allowed to enter the back half have underperformed. That's a very efficient way to create a mediocre team. Is there an alternative? Well, we could sign players with the intention of keeping them for the length of their contracts. If a good bid comes in, it'll be considered. But in the absence of a good bid, the player will run down their contract then leave for free. That's fine. Some might see this as losing money, but it isn't really. The core worth of a player to United is the length of their contract, not their transfer value. End of. That's quite a useful mindset to adopt. As a seller, you need to demonstrate you're prepared not to sell. That really is your only leverage in negotiations. Thompson, instead, has explained in countless interviews that he had no seller's leverage before and won't have any again. He did this because he copped a bit of criticism for selling The Blond Fonz and felt butthurt. |
