Oxford Dictionary of Word Origins is mostly useless, other than to highlight that "down" tends to relate to geography rather than feathers. I guess the jury remains out but, when it's in a geographical name, it really is a bit of a reach to believe it's refers to feathers rather than geography. The entry before it, however, is dowfart, so my time wasn't entirely wasted. |
