Ok, to explain:

It's made of igneous (volcanic) rock but isn't a volcano, i.e. it has never been capable of putting lava out through the earth's crust. It's an igneous intrusion, created from volcanic activity but the lava never got through the crust, rather hardening underground. As the softer rock around it was eroded after the ice age the harder rock of the Law was left behind to form a hill. There was lots of volcanic activity in the area and there were several active volcanoes millions of years ago, but the Law was not one of those volcanoes itself.

Without explaining the basics of geology in a rather dull lecture fashion that you could get on pretty much any website about the subject I can't really put it better than that.
Yeh, but it looks like a volcano, and it pretty much was a volcano, what wit all that lava and stuff. So, a volcano.

The Law is, basically, a volcano.

Well my Primary 4 classroom had a perfect view of the Law (or La, old Scots for hill) and Mrs Smith our teacher said it used to be a volcano so I've always believed it was. The old Law tunnel used to come out on a bit of ground next to my granda's allotment.

Google the dundee newtyle railway you'll find there's a railway tunnel under the Law. When I was a kid you could still walk through it but I was too wee and too scared. The south end was set up as an air raid shelter in 1940 but never used. Both ends are now blocked but there's still a manhole entrance that allows access

But isn't it dangerous to put a tunnel through a volcano? Assuming it is a volcano that is. Does anyone know?

I bide only a few yards from the Law Tunnel south entrance. It's still there. It's in the corner of the back garden of one of my neighbours house. It's now got a locked metal gate at the entrance, and as part of the feus of owning his house, he has to allow Scottish Water access thru his garden to the entrance so they can check it twice a year minimum. The Tunnel is prone to leaks. It's doesnae help when there's a Water Tower right above the Tunnel on the East slope of the Law.

Believe it to be the volcanic plug of a long dormant volcano

Thanks to both Yasser and Tom for the enlightenment.
And Zico for the immaculate timing.

Ah, you have to laugh.

This trying to educate people is often a tough gig.

Anyway, by this time tomorrow night we'll know whether our season is still capable of erupting or just an igneous intrusion.

If we don't win, they'll be plenty foaming lava at the mouth, and sparks will be flying.

I know.

Despite the Law looking like a volcano, behaving like a volcano, being made of volcano and being known to be a volcano by everyone, some people cling to the belief that it isn't a volcano.

They need to move on and get over their obsession.
