Last game in charge against West Brom next weekend. Best club manager in history, whatever 'best' means?

The bookies have stopped taking bets on David Moyes taking over. However, this sudden retirement looks to me like a move to also bring Mourinho into the picture while he still hasn't fully committed to returning to Stamford Bridge.

Other suggestions? McLean, perhaps? :banshk:

Mourinho has been publicly pleading for the United job for some time. I'd have a penny on him getting the job.

I'd like Moyes to get it, as if he doesn't you have to wonder what it takes to work your way up doing a really good job at a smaller club for a very long time so that you get a chance at a big job. Moyes deserves it, but Mou would be entertaining.

Mourinho seems the safe choice. He'll do well enough.

Moyes would be a brave one, underwhelming for a lot of people, but he could still be there in 10 years, while Mourinho won't.

I guess Ferguson will largely decide in the end, so that'll help whoever it is.

I think you're right that Fergie will have some sort of say in it, given that he's gonna be a Director and Ambassador for the club.

A certain Peter Houston is job-hunting - wouldna be any money worries there !

But seems opinion leans towards Moyes / Mourinho.

I'll stick my neck out and say there's no chance Mourinho will be offered the job.

He could certainly do a great job there, but I think the hierarchy (I'm thinking the elder statesmen like Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex when he goes upstairs, and not necessarily the Glazers) at the club would want to avoid the self obsessed "look at me" pantomime that he creates around any job he does.

Sir Alex will be an impossible act to follow, so if Moyes does take over I'll wish him the best of luck, he'll need it!

hardly sticking the neck out Morv- Moyes is a stick on.

Rumours rife though that Houston was sounded out for theOld Trafford job of cleaning up the chewing gum

I think they've learned lessons from his last 'retirement'. Quick decision at the right time with sucessor chosen and ready. No uncertainty, speculation or distractions.

Err, I was responding to the first 3 posters above and the many stories in the mass media that have speculated about Mourinho taking over because of the doubts about Moyes' experience at the highest level.

6 year deal for Moyes. A good strong statement of intent.

Or a foolhardy gamble on a man never proven at the top of the game.

Whatevers.

Interesting to read Zonal Marking's Michael Cox's take on Moyes' tactical reputation.

Wouldn't be surprised if his first signing was Baines...

Showed plenty of respect for Dundee United in the 80s.

So Fergie's replacement has been bumped on the head.

Seems slightly harsh to me - the squad Moyes inherited was obviously in need of major changes, and its winning of the league in 2013 more a statement of the weakness of the competition and Ferguson's ability to sweat the aging and limited assets than its quality. After two collectively bungled and panicky transfer windows, I'd have thought they would give him the first half of next season to get it right.

They may have heard what he was planning for the summer transfer window and decided enough was enough. Maybe the chance to terminate his 6 year contract on the cheap due to his failure to get into the Champions (sic) League was too hard to resist.
