Since we've been sponsored by Calor Gas, I've converted my Rover Vitesse to run on propane. Previously, it ran on Belhaven. The finances of Real and Barcelona do make relative sense. What doesn't make sense is the idea that, by beating them on the pitch, you'll inherit their strengths. This seems to confuse football with the dominance hierarchy of a gorilla troop. |

I have to admit to taking a liking to Belhaven Best back in the day, and was almost certainly influenced by the Utd affiliation.... As for The Swiss Ramble's take on the finances of Madrid and Barca I would have to agree with this reader's comment:
You're right in saying Madrid & Barca's huge commercial advantage built on historical success, a favourable position politically and a huge in-built fanbase isn't up for grabs by the teams who beat them, however Man City's turnover increased 302% from £61M in 2005 to £245M in 2012 & in the same time Liverpool's revenue 'only' increased 65% from £122M to £201M, so it's certainly possible for a club's profile and financial circumstances to fluctuate considerably over time. However sod all the cold, hard financial analysis, perhaps a bit like the owners and employees of Google (who make the huge majority of their income from boring old advertising, but get to spend 20% of their time on exciting projects like Google Glass and self driving cars), the new owners of PSG & Monaco are probably thinking, "F*ck it, what else are we going to do with the spare Billions of Dollars we can't invest sensibly?". |

Fill in the blanks: "Turnover is _____, profit is ______ and cash is _____."
Rybolovlev's motives for rooting himself into Monaco are pretty transparent. The QIA is rather different. It has a universe of options to spend its citizens' money sensibly. However, it would appear the QIA is brutally rational when it comes to normal investments and smoking crack when it comes to football. |

I realise Man City have made a ridiculous loss in the intervening years, but turnover's a decent way to indicate the growth potential of a club though? If you were to rationally analyse Chelsea's profit and losses over the last 10 years you'd think they were a basket case. But look at where they've come from in terms of worldwide exposure and onfield success. Now if PSG did buy Messi, that would be a story! |

Ah, the perils of being a big club in a diddy league that doesn't guarantee you CL money even if you finish 1st. ETA: Man City have just signed Jovetic for €30M and PSG have signed Marquinhos for €31M, I would suggest neither is in the David Healy category, so perhaps performance wise at least both clubs will be okay in the meantime.

and in other news Scott Allan has signed a season long loan with Birmingham City- so will be playing against Justle in slightly different colours from those that might have been predicted a year or so ago. |

That's probably not a bad move for him, Manager Lee Clark sounds like he really rates him as well, so it could be the season that he gets the opportunity to prove his undoubted talent. |

But... thighs... When does the transfer window close? Wondering if a starting left back loan signing is becoming our best bet until January. Bound to be some newly displaced to 3rd choice lower premiership or championship players out there. |

All of which raises questions over the decision to let Bazza Dugs go when there was no cover arranged. I guess Jackie thought he could find someone better for the position; he hasn't. |

Not sure that was 100% McNamara's decision though and probably boiled down to the fact that Douglas, along with Daly and Flood were offered reduced contracts to re-sign and he rightly figured he could get a better contract offer, along with a new challenge abroad? This tweet probably says a lot:
