Aye he could've been better. All credit to him however for scoring 1 of the goals at Dens in the QF.

BTW Conan, have you had your visit to Scotland yet?
Pardon?

East Kilbride was annexed to Scotland a long time ago - I'm confused.

Can only think JMc has told McLean he's 3rd, 4th or 5th choice CH when everybodies fit and given his age he's not that keen to be a bench warmer.

Can't see him being the last to leave this summer either.

Nicky Weaver has signed for Aberdeen. Good signing for them.
That could be an annoyingly good signing for them. Part of the joy of Aberdeen these past few years has been their inability to field a decent keeper.

Come off it, McLean was honking. Really bad.
I don't think he was any better or worse than some of the defenders who are playing for kilmarock, st johnstone, ICT, Ross Country etc. He's not a super star, he's limited, but he's good enough as backup for us.

We could take his wage and spend on some random other player. Might end up with a better player, might end up with a worse player. Since much of our new team is in the risky category, I'd like some players who we at least know are capable.

With you on that, Set.

He's obviously got some ability yet seems to have a concentration or application problem. I'd like to think Majacknacamra has ousted him on an attitude basis rather than an ability basis. Do I have to bring up Robbie Neilson & Charlie Miller again to illustrate the value of a good or bad attitude on the rest of the squad?

Just got to wait see how things work out I guess. And bear in mind Ryan and McLean are still United players (I think - can't say I've checked recently).

Apparently PSG just paid £55m for some Uruguayan dude from Napoli of whom I've never heard. I'm sure this is just a symptom of my old age, but still, £55m!? You used to be able to get Pele for that, at least.

Don't understand.

PSG are owned by Qatar's sovereign wealth fund. These people are not in the habit of losing money and the cash they have is already clean, relatively speaking. But PSG seems to be the kind of club that will generate revenue of €100m so in an average year. The 50k stadum already sells out and there's only one serious domestic broadcaster for league rights. So how does Qatar make money here? What's the long game?

Returning to the point, I've never looked at a team lineup and thought: "oh, McLean's in. This'll be interesting." But if it's the debut of some wiry 20-year-old kid picked up from the B team of somewhere foreign, I'm interested. Bollocks to reliable -- just give me interesting.

I humbly suggest McLean is not reliable, a deficiency that makes his presence in the team interesting.

McLean is neither reliable nor interesting and walks like he's just made a mistake in his trousers.

"Reliable" was the wrong word. I guess I meant predictable, in the sense that he's a known quantity. Having guys like that as backup is like sticking on 15, which is a stupid strategy if you're playing poker.

like sticking on 15... if you're playing poker.

You're just doing this deliberately now, aren't you?

McLean is not a person, I would suggest, who'd be happy as fourth choice at Dundee United, which is, at the very best, where he'd sit in the pecking order.
Also, his presence in the team always made me worried.
Now, admittedly he was usually sandwiched between Douglas and Dillon but he did nothing to suggest he was the best of that trio.
Good luck in Dingwall, Brian.

As to the Qataris, perhaps they're investing some of that sovreign wealth to buy some kudos ahead of the World Cup they're hosting.
Show the world they're serious about their football before raking in lots of tourist cash.

He's got a choice to make then - his career isn't exactly on an upwards path, he was released from previous contract, and if we do the same, he's heading downwards rather than staying, working and trying to get up the pecking order.

Wasn't that answered in your previous post, then my follow up linked article and Matthew Syed's Abramovich/Chelsea analysis, where attaching oneself to a prominent institution like a football club can serve as some protection to scrutiny?
