I've hardly been back on the board and in this thread all I said was that Sicily isn't great and that neither is Russell. Naebody decides to get personal by posting a dig saying "good" if I don't go back. The first personal dig. Then Naebody in the next post accuses me of getting personal as quickly as I can, when it was quite clearly him being personal. My perception - you may see otherwise - is that Naebody takes needless digs at me. The last one after my brief return when I'd made a post about why United may not want too good players as big clubs will pick them as quick as you like, and Naebody pipes up with another personal dig (dressed up as a joke). I'm not on here to have this kind of shit and if you'd rather me f*ck off again, then feel free to say. It was why I left last time and it wasn't a big wrench doing so. When did a Scot last make a decent impression in Serie A? When did a Brit last manage it? I would imagine the odds are heavily against a quite good SPL player making it in Serie A, but I'd still love to see Rustle give it a go. |

I know you've had trouble accepting it, but I'm debt-free! Ask Eggman. As for the rest of this, my valuation of Johnny Russell and I believe most folks' valuation of Russell was around £1.5m last season. Since then he has become markedly better, adding 6 goals to his tally for last season, or just over 40% more. I'd like to also point out that includes the current period sidelined with a broken leg and that the season isn't over. He's also still only 23. £2m, no less. |

Either Rino Gattuso's wife or Joe Jordan? David Platt or maybe jay bothroyd's 5 goals for Perugia. One of the advantages in the decline of the SPL's standing should be we end up with lots of good players in foreign leagues just like the Norwegians and Danes hopefully. Then again being shackled to England most of our decent players will end up down there as they can just about speak the lingo. Is MacGregor our most successful export to a non UK league since the 80's? |

Ah, but he's a year nearer the end of his contract and if he won't extend he will be sold in the summer before he can pre-contract with someone else in January. |

That has to be the most dispiriting part of the way transfers and contracts are done these days. A prize possession going to a fire sale discounted item in 3 months. It's not even as if we get to play the other side of the equation, as we're not likely to (williingly) pay a transfer fee ever again, so a reduced fee for someone else's good players is irrelevant to us. The last year of a contract is just a target rich environment for the bigger clubs to pick up players they might have had to pay more for if they really wanted them and were worried someone else might get in there first. Meanwhile, the refusal to sign a new contract with the hope of something much bigger on offer elsewhere sours the relationship between club and player so that even if no great offers are forthcoming, the player is more likely to move to a club at the same level for similar money rather than both parties putting their unsuccessful re-signing negotiations behind them. Whenever we do pick up a player on a pre-contract, they may turn out to be great, but where is the magic and excitement in signing a player who stays at his club for a further 6 months? A dribble of updates on the form of Chris Erskine at Partick is not the kind of news to set the pulse racing. What is Erskine's form at Partick? |

All true, WKD. Perhaps it'd be an idea for a club outside the Silly Leagues to look at changing their contract structure, which seems to be a pre-Bosman legacy. Get the structure right and everyone benefits. I propose all professional players are offered an 18-month rolling contract that includes a break fee equivalent to between two and six months of wages (depending on experience) plus a pre-defined transfer release clause that gives 20% paydown to the player himself. Make it so <clap>. |

Does the break fee work both ways? i.e. player can pay 6 months of his salary to get out of his contract, and club can pay the same to terminate a player's contract? Wouldn't that just make the contracts rolling 6-month contracts? |

Good question. I'm still a bit perplexed about how footballers' contracts don't have notice periods, so can't really give a definite answer on what's possible and whether break clauses would have to be offered ex aequo. As to how to work a notice period into a rolling contract, I don't know. One way could be make a default structure it so the notice period is 18 months to match the rolling contract length, but I suspect the terms would be different for every player. The idea here is to give players enough job security and financial incentive to to align their own interests with those of the club. One size won't fit all. |

It's an interesting idea, and there does seem to be room for doing things differently regarding payer contracts that suit both player & club. I've got a very tedious job to do this afternoon, so will no doubt spend some time considering this problem. Expect great things. Or for me to never return to the subject again. |

Have been to Catania once before as well and remember it having really impressive architecture and a fairly stunning view of Mt Etna from the park on the hill. Though on the downside almost every car had a scrape or dent in it, so if you are visiting I'd definitely advise against driving there... Siracusa is well worth a visit though, and not just for the Greek ruins, the old town Ortygia which sticks out into the sea is quite beautiful, with it's Piazza Del Dumo particularly comely. ![]() As Eggman said Catania are a very decent team in a pretty strong league, so it would be a step up for Russell. One vague point of reference might be Mauricio Pinilla, the guy who struggled to make an impact at Hearts a few years back (mainly due to injuries, personal problems etc). Was surprised to see him playing for Palermo a few season back and it appears he's not done bad in Serie A: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauricio_Pinilla |

CLUB STATEMENT Dundee United Football Club would like to put the record straight regarding press reports today relating to Johnny Russell. Firstly, the same agent who wished the Club to sign a commission based mandate for him to sell Johnny Russell our behalf has now told us that the player will not sign a contract extension and that he wishes to leave Dundee United. Johnny Russell is under contract until May 31, 2014. With regard to the so called "third" offer, as this is now in the public domain we can confirm we received a second bid of €450,000 (in instalments) three weeks ago and this was rejected. Dundee United would like Johnny Russell to stay at the Club but it now appears from press reports that his agent is intent on forcing a transfer, at a fee which falls well below our valuation of the player. We have the utmost respect for Johnny Russell and will not stand in the way of him furthering his career. However we will not be told by agents how to run our football club. We have invested heavily in our youth set up over the last few years and expect to receive a decent return on this investment when players are sold. If we are to continue to invest in our youth system and develop players to enable them to further their careers, we must ensure that this investment is sustainable. |

450k Euros? Kin'ell, Ron. Such an offer suggests that the agent has been putting the word around for the last month or so. Let the bad mouth tasting and hilarious lowballing now begin in earnest! What's Ian Holloway up to these days? |

The United smackdown is in reference to a Sun report saying the Sicilians were offering £800,000 "in total" http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/sport/spl/4899099/Russells-sold-on-Italian-job.html Just for reference, seems his agent is John Viola. |
