Trying to think of another player who transferred from one team with a controversial European cup semi final history to another.

Is this the default close-season transfer thread?

If so, it seems Motherwell are signing Stephen McManus. We were after him.

Seems Motherwell are committing quite a lot of money. Where are they getting it from? Is it just the proximity to Glasgow combined with the absence of The Rangers from the top flight that is making the Mighty Well (arf!) so attractive?

I think they were worse than us for losing a few first team players, so should have some spare wage budget.

And he's probably on less than Goodwillie.

As Setenza said they've lost a fair few 1st team players so have probably freed up some wages, but would imagine they'll have picked up considerably more TV money than usual by finishing 2nd last season as well?

Squad renewal/regeneration update from the gaffer:
Quote:

With Brian McLean in talks with Ross County over a possible move, Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara’s hunt for a central defender will now intensify.

The former Falkirk, Motherwell and Preston defender returned home from the Tangerines’ training camp in Germany to begin discussions over a possible move to County.

Signed last summer, the defender made 38 appearances for the Tannadice side, scoring once against Dundee in the Scottish Cup quarter-final.

However, many of his starts arose because Sean Dillon, Gavin Gunning and Keith Watson were sidelined through injuries.

McNamara confirmed: “Brian returned home last Friday and is talking to Ross County.

“But, even although we have brought in Calum Butcher, we were still seeking another central defender and, after deciding not to pursue our interest in Ismo Vorstermans, that remains ongoing.”

The Dutch defender only played an hour of United’s 2-0 defeat to Energie Cottbus before the Tangerines gaffer elected to look elsewhere.

McLean was fine cover, and unless we paid well over the odds for him, can't see why he's be released. SPL experience is what we need.

Ross Counry surely not outbidding us.

Think so. As long as we're not paying him to go.

Aye he could've been better. All credit to him however for scoring 1 of the goals at Dens in the QF.

BTW Conan, have you had your visit to Scotland yet?

McLean was very poor with the ball and didn't mark tightly enough. If he's found a club with no cost to us- well and good but I do hope we get another decent defender or two.
