That's straight out of the school of Alan Partridge haggling....

As for the offer, it sounds like piddly money based on what JR could have been worth if he'd been on a longer contracts and not injured during the crucial part of last season, but you could probably list the players that Utd have ever sold for over £700K on one (or maybe two hands....), so things could be worse.

Apart from the bit where we lose by far our best striker. :ermm:

Courier says bid accepted.

Maybe we use the windfall to fund a couple of players who've played above the Third Division before?

Tully says Celtic will match any bid, the cunts, though that story seems stale given ....

£750k's not bad, I guess. We move on.

Hopefully we added a promotion clause too I'm sure Derby wouldn't miss another £500k if they get promoted to the riches of EPL.

Going to need a whole new strike force as the squad now has about as much up front as keira knightley .

See what I did there?

The problem with the financially crafty move by The Celtics not getting into a bidding war is that it does indeed make them look like right c*nts, probably spurring United to make a point of not selling to them if they can avoid it.

It's a massive waste of time for United, as well as Derby and whoever else might be interested in negotiating a move if they are always going to come in with a last-second matching offer which the c*nts assume will always find favour with the player. Although how they match promotion bonuses I'm not sure.

Not sure Justle will be too delighted to see his boyhood heroes indifferently expressing a mild preference for him only if someone else does too, and even then only grudgingly on the same terms. Do they want him to bless the hooped green turf of Parkhead Park or not?

She was pretty useful in Bend It Like Beckham. Better than Rory Boulding in fact, although, you know, faint praise etc.

If they will match, surely, surely we know some chairman of a club somewhere who'd put in a huge offer as a favour...?

You misunderstand the (frankly very clever, in a cunty way) game theory involved.

Celtic have allowed it to be known that they'll snipe the auction, if they want.

The only way for any club to sign the player is to pay more than Celtic are prepared to pay. But with Celtic not actively participating in the auction, there's no competitive bidding process that's essential for price discovery. As a result, a "winning" bid from any club other than Celtic is either pointless (because Celtic will match it) or over the odds by definition (because Celtic will not match it). The problem with a stalking horse bidder trying to inflate the offer price is that they might actually have to pay the price offered.

This is a neat way for Celtic to lever the "boyhood heroes" advantage to stymie the price discovery process. Doing so is in their favour and to our disadvantage. I admire the deviousness involved.

What United should've done, in retrospect, is hold a sealed-bid auction involving anonymous parties and multiple bidding rounds. These (mostly) work for telecom spectrum so there's no reason they can't work for selling middling young strikers with ugly arm tattoos.

750k? Not bad but not particularly good either.

Now that Celtic have played their sneaky little hand, I hold out hope that Mourinho does us a solid with a one minute to midnight bid of 17 million.
