Osborne's Plan

Not sure what to think of this plan. Get tax free shares in your company (upto £50k) but have to give up some employment rights, such as unfair dismissal and redundancy.

Employment rights for a small company can be a nightmare, but giving out shares in most cases would be pointless, they're not worth much unless the company's bought in most cases. Being a shareholder give some rights, but it seems two ideas forced together than something that makes sense for either the employee or the employer.

If Osborne wants to reduce workers rights, just go ahead and do it, forget the overly complicated schemes.

Would anyone give up their rights for some shares?

My company is reaching saturation in our market so f*ck that. Also will never be bought out, thanks to our Swiss overlords being the ones who usually do the buying.

But f*ck it anyway. This government would love it if anyone who earned under 50k all spontaneously died, or so it seems.

Why would you say City of London firms would be particularly keen to use it?

As Set says it's evident the Tories would like to simply do away with such crazy lefty ideas as redundancy pay, the right to request flexible working, time off for training and the right to challenge unfair dismissal.

Rather than having the guts to do so they're attempting to bribe workers into accepting the loss of such rights.

Shameful really.

most likely environment where the culture of summary firings still prevails and since you're not exactly giving anything up the thought of a £50k, money for nothing ,"bung" might be attractive.

Course, the thought of a money for nothing culture being in existence outside the public sector might be a non sequitur to Ruth Davidson et al but its not hard to find it if you look for it.

George Osborne has been accused of opening up new tax avoidance opportunities after it emerged companies will be allowed to give back employment rights to selected workers who receive tax-free shares under his shares-for-rights scheme.

The loophole could be used to reward high-paid staff with tax-exempt shares worth up to £50,000 without loss of access to fair dismissal procedures, redundancy pay and other "gold-plated" employment rights.

The shares can be added to any held in other tax-free employee schemes, creating a "pure tax advantage" for the better off rather than simply a means of reducing rights, according to one accountant. Another said it opens up "lots of tax abuse opportunities, including contractual abuse".
