Only a few days until the Olympics. Everyone excited? Any sports looking forward to? Any favourite sponsor? I think it'll be better than expected, but that won't stop the queue of complains about everything from prices to tv schedules to queues. |

Sorry to be the predictable killjoy as ever, but, in a word, no. It's a grand exercise in redistributing money from the public to the private purse, as if that process weren't already ongoing. It features hopelessly imbalanced competition with rich nations having best facilities and sports science and so on and simply therefore outcompeting all other smaller nations who rarely get a chance on the podium. (Though they'll do ok in sports where the big nations just don't give a f*ck, like GraecoRoman wrestling. Which we'll get no coverage at all of.) It even makes football look egalitarian. It's a flagwaving and grandstanding waste of time and money which will see some people who can run imperceptibly faster or throw something slightly longer than some others being rewarded for this utterly useless endeavour by hoarding the many millions that could be spent on turning a world crammed with obese/malnourished citizens into more healthy ones. Speaking of the health issue, its largely being sponsored by some of the greatest criminals of our age, companies like Cadbury's who don't pay taxes here but fill our nation's youth with empty calories and turn them into the kind of couch potatoes who will live vicariously through this very sort of event. It's an excuse for hugely corrupt politicians to hide behind feelgood factors while turning away and raping our planet further, getting licence to do so by reflected glory. Further, there isn't one event at the whole thing that doesn't already have its own world championship, major event or world cup. Also, it will cram our media coverage to exclusion of all other issues for a month or so, limiting choice for the rest of us who aren't interested. Who amount to many, many millions. But other than that, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Edited by Cobardon, Jul 18 2012, 03:53 PM.

Sports Day's already starting to cunt up my morning commute. Year after year I've been funding this fucking city (which by the way already lurches into retardation three times a day because of a broken signal or a jumper on the Northern Line). What am I getting in return here? I'm not a shareholder of Adidas, Coke or McDonald's, I'm just the fucker who lives here. They've mortgaged off my daily misery to the highest bidder and I'm not getting the dividend. A new velodrome? Fuck off. |

My favourite sponsor is Samsung because they make some cracking TV's which allow me to sit on my couch watching others exercise in HD. Is lawn Bowls still an olympic sport? , that should be fun. |

20 grand infact, but only if my 10,000/1 bet on Usain Bolt beating 9secs comes up! A lovely new velodrome to fulfill the demand for indoor speed cycling in Glasgow. Getaway drivers to adopt greener modes of transport by 2018. |

I believe, by reading between the lines, that the BBC may be covering the Olympics (not that they've mentioned it). |

Going to watch the two games at Hampden on Thursday. Looking forward to seeeing Alba who impressed me greatly at the Euros. It is hard to get excited about an event where we seem to be content on not picking the best people because they have not played the local politics, the fencing is bad enough but the taekwondo is beyond a joke. I am also pissed off with Stuart Pearce, not so much team GB as a development pool for a future England. Johnny Evans and Jordan Rhodes must be fuming. I also feel a bit for Beckham who has whored himself all over the globe for the bid and is then replaced with Giggs. Who will no doubt be just as much a passagenger as Becks would have been. I was all for it (as a one off) but the selection is dreadful and not purely from a no Scottish perspective. |

Off to a good start Wrong Flag Not too much damage done though as there was about as many people at hampden today as there was in the Hibs end after 80 minutes of the cup final. Just wait until we play the Borat version of the kazakhstan anthem |

It's quite gratifying for us naysayers that United sold more tickets for last week's friendly v Everton than were sold for Hampden today. This is what you can expect when you force jollity in areas where next to no bugger wants it. And the Korean kock-up tonight is embarrassing isn't it? After this, Scotland can never complain if when in any foreign backwater 'God Save the Queen' is bunged on and the good old St George flag run up the flagpole for our edification. Now, all we need is the opening ceremony to announce Iran as Israel and we can all have a giggle together. |

If you set aside the various software glitches, and power supply issues they are fantastic. |
