Proposed changes to charity tax relief.

I can't make sense of these proposals. While I can see the political desire to be seen to close down on the schemes that allow some people to pay less tax, doing so in a way that might damage charities doesn't seem the best move. Unless tax incentives don't make any difference, which would be a big change in policy.

If there's any sort of relief available to have different levels of taxation, such as returns on investments, then people will pay lower than others, even if they earn a lot.

And worse, it's all to earn '£50-100 million' a year. Maybe just scrap a battleship or something instead?

Just a gimmick to make it seem that they're tough on high earners.

That's the thing, usually gimmick's don't do much good or much damage. Limiting charity donations would seem to be a bit more likley to do damage.

Do much good to who? Like a typical media headline, it'll be remembered by some, and when there's a u-turn in a few months' time, hardly anyone will notice.

Well, I cunting well noticed this one.
Here's Jeremy Hunt justifying the canning of the UK Film Council, as well as slicing a third off of the Arts Council's funding, during the coalition's 'spending review', by saying he wants to encourage more American-style philanthropy by people like this.
And at the top of this thread is...policy that completely negates that!
Honestly, how the fuck did we end up in this mess?
Roll on the next general election/independence*.

Not sure what the fuss is about. I'm sure I'd rather have Tom Hunter paying a big tax bill into a general pot than him picking and choosing where his "charitable" donations go-£50k or 25% of income is still a big whack of relief that preserves most donation levels-except those discretionary ones from the super rich (10% of whom paid less than the basic rate of income tax on their earnings last year).
