ball hit into an empty net, but theres another chap on the goal line. he's in an offside position so the goal is chopped off. fair? i think not!

Not this one gain.

Gallacher was right next to the ball as it crossed the line and was interfering with the defender's attempt at stopping it - highly unlikely the defender would have got to it, but he backed towards the defender as Ferguson went to shoot, clearing the area of the goal for him to aim for, so he wasinterfering with play. There were two St Mirren defenders pretty much on the goal/bye line along with Gallacher, so it's unlikely under today's rule that he would be offside at all, but I guess back on that dire day at Hampden in '87 level was offside.

Gallacher didn't have a clue what was going on, and it didn't make a difference. So he was neither seeking to gain a goal scoring advantage, nor interfering with play (because as you've said, he didn't interfere with the defender).

Edit: What next; Sturrock's goal against Rangers in the 1981 League Cup Final was fairly disallowed as well? Pish.

Was that the one with Holty in an offside position not interfering with play whatsoever? Never see this, got a link? B)

Don't need one, it's burned into my subconscious, i.e. no.

the ball had hit the net before the defender even reached gallacher so there was no interference with play. i'll echo what eggy said-"pish."

there was also the one in the final in 1991 where im pretty certain hamish french had a goal chopped off because darren jackson was offside.

denied two scottish cups! thank god for the rule change. it may cause confusion in some parts, but for me its definitely fairer.

i tried looking up youtube for the 1981 final, couldnt find the chopped off goal though

How many bookable offences did Motherwell commit? (I'm looking at Nijholt in particular: his first foul on French on the edge of the box was a certain yellow then as much as it is now). I reckon Syme got caught up in that whole 'friendly final' shite. Immensely unlucky in that final.
