Working on the assumption that everyone else doesn't have access to Wikipedia:

The term was first used in 1858 in cricket to describe HH Stephenson's feat of taking three wickets in three balls. A collection was held for Stephenson, and he was presented with a hat bought with the proceeds.

I'd very much like to see that hat. I hope it was jaunty.

No idea about "clean sheet". Something to do with bedwetting, most likely.

Well, it was an opportunity for someone to show their hidden knowledge of the game, while simultaneously brightening up an otherwise dull Sunday others are perhaps having. Or to be a smartarse! :banshk:

THROW-IN, there's another mystery...

No criticism intended, Findus. The "hat trick" story's so winsome I'll take any opportunity to repeat it. The thought of sportsmen having a whip-round to buy their high achiever a hat speaks of better times, as does that team photo on the link above.

Rubber? That's an odd one. There's a theory that it's from crown green bowls, and rubbing up against the white one (so to speak). How this came to mean "any concluding match" is, however, a curiosity.

Back in the days of my youth, my dad always referred to a 'throw in' as a 'shy'. It was fairly common term back then tho' it seems to have died out now. Same with the term 'bye line' meaning the line running from corner flag to corner flag including the goal line. A goal kick was referred to as a 'bye kick'

shy
bye-line
bye kick

no idea of the origines of any of them.

Funny, I immediately thought of both of those when I looked at this thread.
'Shy' must be an olde word for 'throw', ie - Coconut Shy at the fair.
Bye-line I've no idea about.

A coconut shy (or coconut shie) is a traditional game, originally known as 'The love grove alley', frequently found as a sidestall at funfairs and fêtes. The game consists of throwing wooden balls at a row of coconuts balanced on posts. Typically a player buys three balls and wins each coconut successfully dislodged. In some cases other prizes may be won instead of the coconuts.

The word 'shy' in this context is a colloquial English term, meaning 'to throw' or toss.

And a coconut shite is what you have after eating a Bounty.

Poster of the year, folks. Your decision.

If I didn't know better I'd suggest Clarkyboy had made a return.

In the early days of footie the fans stood along the sidelines and kept the ball in play but since there was no-one along the backlines, then in those ancient space starved pitches if the ball went over the line you generally said "bye" to the ball, hence...
