Football's such a f*cking annoying game!

Before the match, I'd have been happy with a draw. When it went 1-0 them, I'd have settled for a draw, and been pleased. At 1-1 I'd have settled for a draw. At 2-1 us I'd probably have settled for a draw. At 3-1, no, not at all. Now it's 3-3 and I'm pissed, and kind of hoping for a draw, but also a win!

Stop messing with my head, bloody game!

The sheep are losing again :haha:

Motherwell for third this season?

By the way, what about all those offsides? They stopped even bothering showing the replays on Alba cos they knew they'd got it wrong again. Two or three of them weren't even close. Atrocious linesmanship.

I was thinking this. More pertinent, perhaps, is the fact that Daly was making some fantastic bending runs to get on the end of those passes. Shite lino or not, that's good news. Hopefully they watch the DVD in training and Big Jon takes some heart from that.

Watching Alba that didn't look a very good game and we didn't play very well, but there were some promising signs. Daly was impressive, right enough, but Russell seemed flat and the midfield weren't supporting the forwards enough. Still, mid table. I suspect that's more or less where we'll stay.

And as long as we win the League Cup by trouncing Celtic 3-0 at Hampden, then follow it up by beating Rangers to lift the Scottish, I suppose I'll be happy enough.

Dearie me. I'm still at a loss to explain why we didn't collect three points there, never mind why we didn't win handsomely.
The disbelief at full-time was palpable.
Although it was perhaps not what you'd call a swashbuckling performance, we were so comfortable for an hour.
Then we just stopped playing. Bizarre...

Some good performances, first-half especially. Daly was excelllent, as were Rankin, Swanson and Dixon.

Watson had a tough time both halves, initially against Griffiths and then Sproule (thankfully neither seem to have any end product).

Willo was all bustling energy defensively but this continued when we had possession, with his contributions a bit harum-scarum.

Swanson looked really up for it for the first 45 minutes but his lack of fitness seemed to tell as the game went on (not to mention the lazy officiating from both linesmen, who decided to take no chances and flag everyone offside).

On the other 'wing', Johnny Russell worked really hard but had a day when nothing really came off. One to forget for him.

The centre-half pairing seemed to be cope well with the Hibs forwards, although they're offered little protection from a midfield that moves as one. This means that if we lose the ball when we're attacking, there's a huge space in front of our defence for opponents to get the ball into and under control.

Dusan seems to have been swapped for an impostor. Still a good stopper but his decision-making looks suspect and his kicking was woeful.

Scott Robertson. Had what can only be described as a nightmare of a game. Missed tackles, lunging hopelessly at through-balls, no first-touch to speak of and passing was mainly confined to stabbing at a ball that had just bounced off his shins.
He looked lost at points, epitomised by one moment on the right when, after some excellent hold-up play from Daly, he had several options and just ran around in a circle with the ball at his feet while both sets of players watched, slightly bemused.

He probably should have been substituted at half-time, which brings us to the management's contribution.

So, we go 3-1 ahead with half-an-hour to play. At this point Russell's injured, Swanson's spent and Robertson's having a hell of a time.
In fact, everyone seemed to just stop playing the game that had gotten us into that position. The midfield stopped snapping, the tempo dropped to an almost flat-line pace and our main thought seemed to be, 'soak it up and punt the ball to Danny/Jon'.

And the dug-out did...nothing. While Hibs went four-up-front...

Russell was ready to be brought off, as he was injured, to be replaced by Barry Douglas (a man I discovered mid-week is nicknamed 'Basher').
But, while United went through the protracted farce of some sideline powerpoint presentation to 'Basher', Hibs grasped the nettle.

A cruel exposing of the folly of zonal marking when you've only three six-footers in your team, and then the gifting possession, plus both centre-halves deciding to have a 'moment', left us reeling. And with Basher still kicking his heels on the sidelines.

From that point on we were paralysed by indecision.

I felt for Houston, as he was a little between a rock-and-a-hard-place: Do we dig in and risk losing another goal? Do we go all-out for the win and risk losing another goal?
However, by doing nothing he left it to the mercy of chance and I'd have preferred if he'd tired to affect some sort of change.
In fact, I go so far as to say if we'd brought on, say, GMS and Armstrong and been beaten, I wouldn't have minded (too much).

As it was we left with a point from a game where we could have, conceivably, run up a very handsome score.

Phew! Glad I got that off my chest.

Embraced. Owned. Moving on...

Oh really?

Anyway...

We were so much better than Hibs I was almost embarrassed for them. They had nothing in midfield and their defence was poor. No energy, no aggression, no obvious idea of what they should be doing. And yet they got a draw. They've got O'Connor and Griffiths, who will give any team uncomfortable moments, but they didn't have to exactly burst themselves to seek out opportunities they way we made it easy for them now and again.

I thought we dominated 80% of the game, with Rankin, Swanson and Gunning the most impressive. Daly had the usual mix of lumbering hopelessness and goals. I don't think there's anything else to say about him until he stops it with the goals. Ah! But there is! He had a good game today.

Watson struggled with everything. Russell got nothing going forward, but contained his man pretty well. The midfield did well - I disagree with reekie on the Scott Robertson question - he did OK.

I'd have liked to see Dow, or even LDV, KMB or GMS, as some of our guys tired and a bit of pace and attacking thrust could have exposed Hibs. Bouglas for Justle was a very dull like-for-like shrug of a substitution.

Overall a good performance against poor, poor opposition, spoiled by a few goofs and slack moments that Hibs punished us for very efficiently.
