If 3 months to go before they can precontract with someone else is 'very early days' then I'm not surpised we're in this position. |

Hm. Fair enough, though Scotland is already well beyond this. What we have is a reasonably level playing field of bankruptcy. It just so happens that we're also shite in it. However, I'm sure Motherwell and St Johnstone fans are reasonably pleased with the way communal bankruptcy is working out. There are ways United could effect a change rather than indulging in the folly of survival. But without the former we're stuck with the latter. I'm not sure much has changed in the eight months since writing that, except that we've lost a few games. |

It's all about TV money ain't it, two SPL TV deals have fallen through in the last 10 years and both times the hastily negotiated replacement deals have significantly diminished the funds available to the SPL clubs and hence the product on show as well. Comparing the spending power of the EPL is thoroughly depressing, in the 2009-10 season Wigan Athletic had an average Home crowd of 18,000 and a turnover of £43m, in the same period Celtic averaged 45,500 and had a turnover of £52.5m and United averaged 7,820 with a turnover of £6.05m. So Wigan have about 2.3 times the amount of fans as United (and they're playing against Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool et al) but 7.1 our income (the majority of which they piss down the drain on player wages of course...). The legions of SKY Sports subscribers in Scotland only feeds the inequality as well, with the vast majority of what they pay each month going towards financing the EPL deal as opposed to the SPL deal. Unfortunately it's very difficult to see how things are going to dramatically change anytime soon as well.

The more of this shit I read, the more I wish United would simply go bust. If there's sufficient interest then the team will survive in one form or another - if not then there's really no point in any event. Let's start again as a football team rather than a failed private limited company. |

I'm not sure what your point is. Just to be clear, I don't propose that we run around borrowing as much money as possible and then repeatedly going bust. The Dees problem is not that they went bust but that they've adopted reckless borrowing and subsequent insolvency as a lifestyle choice. |

Agree. Either come up with a cogent and deliverable plan to repair the business, or don't. If there's no plan except baseless hope then there's no plan. The current option -- death by a thousand cuts -- is demoralising for all concerned. I'm a United supporter. But what exactly do I support? I didn't support Jim Mclean's reckless stupidity that broke the balance sheet, and I didn't support Eddie Thompson's high stakes, low return game of Championship Manager. I don't support Stephen Thompson's idea of austerity, which seems to involve limping randomly towards an empty horizon on bloodied stumps. As a business, I've never supported United. But stick 11 bodies in tangerine and I'll watch. We're always told a football clubs is all about the fans, not the owners. If that's the case, why are we worrying so much about the owners? |

Oh come on- surely none of these players leaving would be a catastrophic loss* - particulalry in view of this season's form in that they've collectively failed to put themselves in the shop window in terms of performances this season. So - opportunity knocks for our youth system and any budding Scott Allans. Are you listening Ross Smith and maybe it'll free up a salary to tempt Fran back now that McInnis has fffd off to Bristol? * certainly hope ST is saying that to their agents. I'd be particulalry sad about Srobba of course cos he defintely had it in him- but lets face it, he went backwards |

It's not a film though is it... Anyway, theres a disproportionate focus on "the Pope" as a subject of criticism, when there are plenty more religious leaders and even corporate aristocrats worthy of at least equal target. As for the handpicked post Naebody, it's quite misrepresentative. At the point of interest the thread had descended into "Eddie Thompson V Stephen Thompson?", which I still remain is pretty f*cking pointless. I believe that Stephen Thompson has outlined his plans: "I want no debt. Back to rations 'til then." We'll have to accept that poorly conceived business plan, as none of us are in a position to change it. From there, however, we can talk about the best way of fulfilling this despotic demand, so that we can make that debt-free target and embark on another plan to restore a bit of pride and purpose to this club. The way the club are handling this target is beyond stupid. In order that we get out of this hole, we need to generate money from nothing. That happens from grassroots football and the sale of talent. The energy transfer here is knowledge + effort (from staff) -> money from talent. Allowing most of our useful, saleable assets to leave for free or for compensation money marks a significant loss overall and leaves us swirling in this whirlpool of shit for far longer than we need to. |

This post is just so retarded you're going to have to start another thread in the non-football section entitled "The Pope causes AIDS" so I can comprehend it and leave this thread to football finances. |
