Says who? "Acronym" wasn't even coined until the end of the Second World War, when military slang pushed into the wider consciousness via abbreviations such as Anzac and MIA. You can search back to what was written in the 40s and find examples of both these useages being called acronyms. You can also check the etymological root (it appears to have been nicked off the Germans, incidentally), but that doesn't support the "must be pronounceable" thing either. In fact, the German definition of akronym specifically includes unpronounceable constructions. My own suspicion is that the word acronym was coined based on the broad definition. But dictionary writers, in their pedantic way, noted the pre-existence of initialism so they invented this "must be pronounceable" thing to make a (fake) distinction between the two. It's never been used that way though -- largely because initialism has never been used at all. In summary, words mean what they mean. I hope this settles matters. F*ck off. |

I'm loving that Google Ngram Viewer - I didn't know it existed until two minutes ago. My first search came up with this. I then tried this. Interesting. I remember a time when my weekends were exciting... |

Never seen that before, brilliant. This has just enriched my existence. My first search was bollocks. In one of the earliest texts, bollocks is in the dictionary as a proper synonym of 'testicules'. I'll never do any work again!

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Acronym I'm not really concerned where the words come from, Naebody, just what they mean now. And WTF and TFH aren't acronyms. I'm surprised you're arguing this. |

This shit is epic. http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/graph?content=dundee%2Caberdeen%2Cedinburgh%2C+glasgow&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=0&smoothing=3 Lots of interesting large and mini-peaks in there, anyone want to give a stab at explaining them? The Aberdeen one is presumably about the oil, though I'm wondering if it's rather due to something less obvious such as series of popular books with a place called Aberdeen in them? Might even be about the build up of Aberdeen in Hong Kong, or something else completely. Edited by findus, Aug 20 2011, 05:49 AM.

Here's one of my favourite NGrams. It pins God's death at 1935, which seems about right. http://ngrams.googlelabs.com/graph?content=Heaven%2Chell&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=0&smoothing=3 Eggs, do please take a moment to understand an argument before continuing to argue. You're in the big leagues now, where a statement like "I don't care what it meant or how it's used, just what it says on one source out of three in this Random House unabridged online dictionary" is only going to succeed in making you look a recalcitrant f*ck. And we both know you're not one of those, right? |

Then kindly give a current dictionary definition. I know you love etymology, but words often develop and change meaning. So what I'm interested in isn't how the word came about, but what its proper meaning is in 2011. If you can supply a modern source that states AGM is an acronym, then I'm sold. Otherwise all I read from you was the background to the word. This isn't about attitude, or winning an argument, or posturing etc. I'm simply interested in getting to the actual meaning of the word in a way I recognise (which is codified concise distinction, although I accept different people may have different methods of getting the meaning of a word). It may surprise you but I don't argue or disagree for the sake of it. It's honest disagreement and difference of opinion. Before patronising someone, it might be worth noting that your argument may well be different to theirs. So I understand my argument, while you understand yours. Just because some people use a word incorrectly, that doesn't mean that theirs is also a meaning of the word. Bad may well be often used to mean good, but does that mean it now means good? Or gay means crap, as well as homosexual? Does pacific now also mean specific (since so many people confuse the two). Since there is no 'official' meaning of words, then we can use them to mean pretty much whatever they like. My personal preference is for brief, clearly defined meanings in dictionaries. Yours may be different. |
