Tad big, that.

These Office of War Information photos gave me considerable horn for the munitions workers of 1939.

Wonder if all the participants were still wearing their flat caps and trilbys during a 1930's porno.

While hats are no doubt viewed as unnecessary by hirsute members like Whatsa, The more follically challenged on here would probably love to see a return to the fashion of everybody wearing hats.

Is that a circusly small man suited and hatted up on that kids ride, or a kid desperately wanting to emulate pops? That's just fcuking creepy, Naebs. In a good way.

So glad you mentioned this.

My hair actually repels hats. They just sort of fly off by themselves, followed by a giddy flutter of pleasure by my barnet before bristling and sweeping itself back into shape, muttering "f*ck you, hat".

Love it. I definitely want to bring back hats. Good old solid regular hats. Keep the rain off and stop your head from being naked. I watched The Sting the other day, which just confirmed my faith.

Caution!

Paul Newman could make the mismatching shell-suit with sandals & black socks look cool.

I thought these old man flat caps were popular now.

They're great, with the one of the locomotives particularly beautiful.

However, the one of the strapping labourer looks like a mock-up.
Not to get all moon-landing conspiracist but the lighting on his helmet (stop that!) is a bit weird.

I guess the mechanics of taking a Tripacks photo back then required a certain amount of proppery and staged lighting. The one you mention looks almost like a parody of Socialist Realism, which may or may not have been accidental.

Speaking of, here are some jaw-dropping colour photos from Russia in 1910. My favourite is this early shot of The White Stripes.

Those Russian ones were the next old photos I was going to share, some incredible shots in there.

Agree with reekie, the locomotive ones from the first set are stunning, as are the some of the ones of the women manufacturing airplanes. (more in part 1 of that series, btw, for those that missed the link: http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/148072/20110518/rare-color-photos-from-depression-era.htm)

Also really liked this one:

Another to share. Until you check the detail, you could be forgiven for thinking this is a recent snap, even though it's an urban setting:

It's always interesting dating photos. A few of the russian ones look modern too. The colouring or detail of some pictures shouts 40s or 60s etc, or obvious things like cars. Always think it'd be nice doing reverse and making pictures taken today look like old ones.

I'm playing L.A. Noire at the moment, so I'm right in the mix for hats, old 'automobiles' and casual white anglo-saxon hegemony.

Anyone else playing it? It's brilliant.
