Well, not really. But this BBC article makes fascinating reading, and seems to have a lot of overlap with United's own youth policy under Cathro.

Quite a few people have been saying for years that one of the main reasons British national sides suffer so much is from a lack of footballing intelligence. Gerrard's a prime example. Runs about like a headless chicken most of the time, getting 'stuck in', while abandoning his tactical duties. One of the reasons I prefer Serie A is because the players are generally more tactically aware.

Based on the premise that the brain is at least 1,000 times faster than any computer, Bruyninckx's intention is to make sure the young players he trains are programmed to take full advantage of the body's "hard disk" and become more skilful and intelligent footballers.

Holy f*ck. Where to begin when he's based it on a premise that's bollocks?

A cat is at least 1,000 times more agile than any anvil. So should we conclude that the effect would be greater if we threw a cat at an anvil as if we threw an anvil at a cat?

Quote:

Bruyninckx estimates 25% of the 100 or so players that he has coached have turned professional or are in the women's national squads. Compare this one-man Belgian football academy's success rate to England where, according to the Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor, of the 600 boys joining Premier League and Football League clubs at the age of 16, 500 are out of the game by the time they are aged 21.

Ok, BBC. Let's try to compare that.

One in six professional footballers remain professional footballers five years after first becoming professional footballers. Meanwhile, Mr Bruyninckx's system has a one in four chance of producing a professional footballer (or woman) over any duration whatsoever. So - we can't really compare those figures, can we? It's a bollocks comparison, isn't it? Right? Right.

Blah blah training methods. Concentration, distraction, displacement. All sensible, boring stuff you could've written yourself on the back of a fag packet while waiting for a bus.

Then we get to neuroscientist Jessica Grahn who, despite being Canadian, talks sense.

well-rounded training is bound to be better than singular, focused, training. To say these multi-pronged approaches work because they use multiple parts of our brain makes it sound more scientific, but really, that's about marketing.

Ex-f*cking-actly.

(For further ranting around the theme, I refer reader to this earlier thread.)

This fella, Bruyninckx. Surely his name is Bruyninck, and a repeating typo is adding an x to the end, to make it Bruyninckx.

Naebody, why would you choose cats and anvils for that comparison? Is there something you'd like to tell us?

Yeah. I really like cunting up cats with an anvil in the f*ck.
