It's like when England fans are embarrassed when they need to call on the likes of Carlton Cole and Bobby Zamora. |

Honestly, I don't. I don't know why someone would look at a team selection and feel embarrassment. The reaction, the emotion, doesn't make sense to me. So, as someone who feels this embarrassment, can you rationalise where it's coming from? |

Needing to pick 27 year-old English Peterborough players shows how few good Scotland players there are right now. If Scotland have a great side, with great players, then it's a source of pride for a Scotland fan. The same goes for if Dundee United have a great side, with great players. Similarly, if Scotland have a bad side, with bad players, then it's a source of embarrassment. The same goes for Dundee United. Argentina fans feel pride in that they have Messi and other great players playing for them. Spanish fans feel pride in having Xavi, Iniesta and others playing for them. It's a tribal thing. You can go further and ask why have pride or shame for anything to do with anyone else's achievements outwith your own. |

Ah - gotcha. Thanks. It's a kind of communal empathy via personification. I don't really suffer from this, which is probably why I can't get interested in any form of nationalism. But, as I've said before, I'm probably a bit Aspergers. |

You do half talk gash at times, Naebs. You want Scotland to win, because you're Scottish. Can you tell me what "communal empathy via personification" means in real terms? |

While not exactly embarrassed at this latest 'grandson we've never heard of playing for a shit team gets miracle call up', I do feel a touch tired at never ever having a solid striker in the Scotland setup. This grandson was relegated from the Championship with his team last year. When did we last have decent strikers? The Durie, McCoist, Gallacher era? No wonder we haven't qualified for anything since France 98. Having said that, Steven Fletcher's wobbly has left Levein with only Miller as a recognized starter. How long is Goodwillie going to be out of contention for? I'm assuming until Houston gives Levein the nod that his head is sorted after Partygate. Edited by findus, Mar 26 2011, 04:28 AM.

Communal empathy = forming emotions based on what happens to a group you feel part of, but have no direct influence over. Personification = framing that emotion as if a landmass was a person. I'm Scottish, by dint of being born inside its borders and living there for 20-odd years, yet I don't care whether Scotland wins or loses. Is that wrong? |
