Bit of a disaster really. The gate was open to a lucrative semi and final appearance, and we just walked on by.

Watch performances slump now that
a) lots of players are leaving and there's nothing much to play for this season
b) there is even less money available to retain players or improve contracts as a result of exiting the cup
c) it's raining

Absolutely. Forget about snatching third or about fourth getting Europe. We'll struggle to hold onto fifth I reckon.

The summer starts here.
Steady on. We were poor last night but the team's not fundamentally broken.
What are the players going to be motivated for now? We've had patchy application anyway, what with a recent trend of dire first half performances and going behind before pulling ourselves together.

With top 6 assured and no cup to play for, what are they playing for?

If Housty gets us playing decently over the rest of the season he will have done very well.
Do any of them have moves lined up? There's been no pre contracts signed as far as has been announced.

Some of them might need to play well to get a move to a decent club, as they've been linked with in the past as some of their current / recent form is not of the level that likely sparked a lot of interest in them this time last year.
A cup final would have been a pretty good way to earn a new contract somewhere.

I'm not sure how much the urge for a new contract will influence how they play for the rest of the season. Let's face it, every one of them, except maybe Shala, will get a gig of at least the same money elsewhere, even if they didn't play again for the rest of the season due to a niggling injury they just can't seem to shake off. They may figure that interested parties will already know what they're capable of, too.

In fact, I'd imagine Buaben, Conway and Gomis will have a nice little queue of parties who have expressed an interest but haven't tabled offers that were unrefuseable, and they're just biding their time hoping to get a better deal. Money-grabbing, disloyal, cup-winning bastards that they are.

Well it's time for Houston to really show his managerial skills. Why not play some of the players who will feature next year?

I still think we'll do ok, but we're clearly not playing as well as we could, but neither is everyone else. I don't think we'll plummet down the table.

There's enough big games to keep players going.

Triple f*ck.

Is 3rd place (as unlikely as that seems) the only chance of a European place now?
Scotland only has one champs league spot this season so Rangers winning the SPL and Celtic winning the cup would mean 4th place gets a europa league spot.
Good shout Clarkie, I hadn't thought of that.

Surely a big incentive to make sure and confirm 4th place now at least as that sequence of events isn't exactly un-imaginable?

Could be a decent idea, assuming some of them are almost ready but just not being risked while we're in the mix for top 6 and the cup. See new thread.

In case anyone was resisting my gloomy mood, our next two games are away to Rangers, then next Wednesday away to Motherwell. Haven't we played Motherwell 10 times this season?

We usually pack in a few weeks early. With half the team leaving I don't hold out much hope of any renewed burst of enthusiasm.
