Other than the first United game I ever went to (St Mirren at Tannadice), that 2nd leg is the first United game I can remember, and I was gutted. This confirmation of the long-held suspicion doesn't really make things any better. I might get around to watching the game on Youtube (it's all there) to look for game-changing bad decisions / not getting any of the 50-50s, but if memory serves me correctly we just didn't play well. Still...

Ralph Milne's missed chance early on in the first half was a real killer. It was a penalty to them, without doubt. We didn't play well at all in that game. Roma did have a fine team, however with Italian World Cup winners like Conti and Graziani as well as probably the greatest team not to win the World Cup players (Brazil in '82) with Falcao and Cerezo. Intimidating atmosphere where United bottled it, just like many Hampden Cup Finals around that period against inferior teams. |

I was curious about that. A civil action, Dundee United vs Uefa, would be good entertainment if nothing else -- though whoever took the case could only really be of the no-win-no-fee type. If only there was a publicity-grasping dodgy Italian "lawyer" who was familiar with football's underbelly and knew his way around Dundee, eh? Oh well. |

Must be one of the earliest games I can remember seeing as well Findus, was live on tv on a week day and bizarrely they let us watch the whole game at primary school. As iainarab said the chance missed by Milne at 0-0 was pivotal, and as wee jim says in the article he blamed his own players as much as anything else that happened around the game. Unfortunately United just couldn't handle what was a hugely intimidating atmosphere. It's been mentioned before that UEFA had concluded that Roma had attempted to bribe the referee. The question now is, based on the comments from the Roma officials (who have at least had the guts to own up to their shameful actions) can it now be proved that the official actually received the payment and the attempt has been proved to have been an actual bribe? |
