Is there any infringement these days that's an indirect free-kick in the box (other than the keeper picking up a passback or holding the ball too long)? I haven't seen one given for a very good number of years, yet they used to pop up with reasonable frequency in the past past.

Dangerous play? They seem to give a penalty these days for simple obstruction.

Yeah, obstruction and dangerous play both merit an indirect foul anywhere on the pitch, though that's in theory but never in practice.

As I remember it, there was a rash of box-bound indirect free kicks immediately after the 6 second rule was introduced, and referees wanted to try it out. Don't remember many before that though.

What about adopting an indirect penalty for obstruction? No encroaching. That'd be fun, in a chaotic way.

I can only remember one team being penalised for breaching the six second rule. Other than that there were a spate of indirect free kicks when the back pass rule was brought in.

That's interesting. So, let's say Goodie didn't dive but just fell over his own feet. Would the advantage have been lost and should the referee bring play back to the foul on Swanson?

What if Goodrooy made it through on goal but ballooned his shot way over the bar. Take play back to the free kick?
First one, 'aye'.
Second one, 'no'. In fact, this happened at the other end when Prince got the break of the ball post-foul and promptly put his cross out for a goal-kick.

After much deliberation, I think I'm with Eggs on this one.

There was no contact, Goodie did dive, and yet I would award a penalty. The defender was beaten yet still got in the way of Goodrooy, who would have remained in control of the ball if he hadn't been unbalanced by trying to evade contact with the defender, albeit while trying to give the impression of contact with the defender.

I don't know how the referee couldn't have come to the same conclusion on first viewing, as he was a lot closer to the incident than me. :)

Are we to take it that you're also in agreement with Eggs that diving is, basically, all the refs' fault?

Hold up there.

I believe I said 'refs have contributed to diving by rarely giving penalties when a player has been fouled but stays on his feet'.

Do you disagree with that?

Ocht Eggs, that's basically what you said.

Equivocate all you like, but it's what you said. You said it.

That's totally what you said. And no fancy links to whatever you actually did say can change that fact.

See. I even have someone to corroborate the fact that's what you said.
Where's your back-up, ay?

First one, never a penalty.

Second one, maybe a foul, but outside of the box.

I was more pissed off at the ref for giving us a terrible advantage. Goodwillie did have the ball but was on his own with 5 Motherwell defenders and their goalkeeper back in the penalty area. We'd have had far more chance of scoring from a free-kick in my opinion. Never a penalty IMO though.

On a positive note, there seem to be more intelligent advantages being given by refs lately.
